The highly anticipated anime film 100 Meters, adapted from Uoto’s acclaimed sports manga, has released a new trailer that offers a deeper look at its pivotal characters and intense narrative. The film is set to debut in Japanese theaters on September 19, 2025, with a North American release by GKIDS following in October 2025.

A Glimpse into the World of Competitive Running

The latest promotional video, released on July 17, 2025, showcases the central drama and the dynamic between the film’s core cast, emphasizing the rigorous world of track and field. Directed by Kenji Iwaisawa and produced by Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain, 100 Meters promises a hand-drawn, emotionally resonant journey through youth, friendship, and the relentless pursuit of purpose in sports. Official Hige Dandism performs the film’s theme song, titled “Rashisa,” which is featured in the new trailer.

The Five Main Characters Driving the Narrative

The film primarily centers on the intertwined destinies of two sprinters, Togashi and Komiya, whose relationship evolves from mentorship to fierce rivalry. Beyond these two, several other key characters play significant roles in shaping their journey.

Togashi: The Gifted Sprinter

Togashi, voiced by Tori Matsuzaka, is introduced as a naturally gifted athlete who effortlessly excels in 100-meter races from a young age. His innate talent sets the stage for his initial encounters and his later rivalry. The younger version of Togashi is voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki.

Komiya: The Determined Challenger

Shota Sometani lends his voice to Komiya, a transfer student who, despite lacking Togashi’s natural ability, possesses an unwavering determination. Togashi’s initial guidance sparks a powerful ambition in Komiya, ultimately leading to their reunion as rivals on the track. Aoi Yūki voices Komiya in his younger years.

Saizu and Kaidō: Influential Figures

Koki Uchiyama voices Saizu, and Kenjiro Tsuda takes on the role of Kaidō. Both characters are significant additions to the cast, suggesting their importance in the protagonists’ development or the broader competitive landscape.

Nigami: Togashi’s Teammate

Voiced by Jun Kasama, Nigami is introduced as Togashi’s teammate. His character arc is noted to carry a melancholic tone as he grapples with younger generations catching up to his talent, providing another layer of depth to the competitive world of the film.

From Manga to the Big Screen

100 Meters is based on Uoto’s manga series, Hyakuemu, which was serialized online from November 2018 to August 2019 and collected into five tankōbon volumes. The story delves into themes of mentorship, rivalry, and the symbolic nature of running, exploring how identity is forged through both talent and struggle. The film held its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 12, 2025, where it was screened as a “work in progress.”

The film is produced by Pony Canyon, TBS, and Asmik Ace. Yasuyuki Mutō is credited with writing the screenplay, with Keisuke Kojima handling character design and serving as chief animation director. Hiroaki Tsutsumi composed the music for the film.

Fans in Japan can look forward to the theatrical release on September 19, 2025, followed by its North American distribution in October 2025.
