The upcoming anime, Hana-Doll -Reinterpretation of Flowering-, has revealed its opening theme song and announced its television premiere date. Fans can mark their calendars for April 9, 2025, when the series will begin broadcasting in Japan. The anime is based on the Hana-Doll mixed-media project by MOVIC, which centers around the concept of idols and music.

A Blooming Project: The Hana-Doll Concept

Hana-Doll is a 2.5D mixed-media project created by Movic, encompassing various drama CDs, music releases, stage plays, manga, and now, an anime adaptation. The project is focused on the world of idols, specifically exploring the concept of artificially created “perfect idols”. These idols are created through the “Hana Ningyo Project” (Flower Doll Project), which involves implanting special flower seeds inside their bodies. The franchise follows the growth and experiences of these young men as they navigate the challenges of the idol industry while grappling with the unique circumstances of their creation.

Anime Adaptation Details

The Hana-Doll -Reinterpretation of Flowering- anime adapts the first season of the drama CD series, titled “Flowering.” Studio A-Real is handling the animation, with Masahiro Takata (known for The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World) directing the series. GyroKnuckle is in charge of series composition, ensuring the anime stays true to the original story while providing a fresh interpretation. Risa Arai is responsible for the character designs.

Premiere Date and Broadcast Information

The anime will premiere on April 9, 2025, and will be broadcast on Tokyo MX every Wednesday at 10:30 pm JST. BS Nippon Channel will also air the anime from 11 pm JST on the same date. TV Aichi will also broadcast the anime every Thursday at 2:05 AM, starting April 10, 2025.

Opening and Ending Themes

The in-universe idol group Anthos is performing both the opening and ending themes for the anime. The opening theme song is titled “Clockwork Flowers,” while the ending theme song is “Fall Leaves After Fall.” The opening theme is previewed in the recently released trailer, giving fans a taste of the music to come. The CD single for “Clockwork Flowers” is set to release in Japan on April 11, 2025.

The Story’s Focus

The anime will showcase the journey of six young men who dedicate their lives to the Hana-Doll project. These characters are part of the Anthos idol group. The story revolves around Mahiro, Ryoga, Kaoru, Chitose, and other key members of the group.

Anthos*: The Central Idol Group

Anthos* is the seven-member all-male idol group at the heart of the Hana-Doll story. The members include Rihito, Mahiro, Ryoga, Kaoru, Chitose, and Haruta. These characters are central to the anime’s plot.

Manga Adaptation

A manga series titled Hana-Doll: Flowering: Boys Were Still in a Dream** was serialized in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Edge from November 17, 2020, to October 15, 2021. Ikuhiro Nao illustrated the manga, which was compiled into a single volume.

Exploring the Themes of Hana-Doll

Hana-Doll explores themes of identity, artificiality, and the pursuit of perfection in the entertainment industry. The concept of implanting flower seeds to create “perfect idols” raises questions about the ethics of manipulating individuals for entertainment purposes. The characters grapple with their manufactured identities and strive to find their own voices within the constraints of the Hana-Doll project.

The Pressure of Perfection

The idols in Hana-Doll face immense pressure to maintain a flawless image and meet the expectations of their fans and management. This pressure can lead to internal conflicts and struggles as they try to balance their manufactured persona with their true selves. The anime likely delves into these challenges, offering a glimpse into the darker side of the idol industry.

Finding Individuality

Despite being created through artificial means, the characters in Hana-Doll strive to find their own individuality and express themselves authentically. They use their music and performances to connect with their fans and share their unique perspectives. The anime is expected to highlight this journey of self-discovery and the importance of embracing one’s true identity.

The Ethics of Artificiality

The Hana Ningyo Project raises ethical questions about the creation of artificial idols. The anime may explore the moral implications of manipulating individuals for entertainment purposes and the potential consequences of such actions. This theme adds depth and complexity to the story, making it more than just a typical idol anime.

Anticipation for the Anime Premiere

With its unique concept, talented staff, and catchy music, Hana-Doll -Reinterpretation of Flowering- is generating significant buzz among anime fans. The premiere on April 9, 2025, is highly anticipated, and viewers are eager to see how the anime adapts the Hana-Doll project and explores its intriguing themes. The series promises to be a thought-provoking and entertaining addition to the idol anime genre. The combination of music, drama, and complex characters is expected to resonate with a wide audience.
