Yumeya, the artist celebrated for the evocative Shadows of Kyoto manga, has joined forces with writer Maya Miyazaki to launch a brand-new series titled Warui no wa Shakai da (It’s Society’s Fault). The manga debuted on January 24, 2025, on Coamix’s Monthly Comic Zenon platform.

A Budding Romance in the Shadows

The story of Warui no wa Shakai da centers around Maki, a woman who becomes entangled with Tomonori, a man who seems to exist on the fringes of society. Their connection is unconventional; Tomonori often pays for Maki when they go out, but he also utters the strange word “namapo.” The series will delve into their developing romance, exploring the complexities of a relationship with someone from the “dark side of society.”

Yumeya’s Return to Manga

Yumeya made her debut with the Shadows of Kyoto (Ura Kyoto) manga, which was serialized on the Comic Tatan website from August to November 2020. A single compiled volume of Shadows of Kyoto was released in Japan in December 2020. Titan Comics later released the compiled book volume in English on January 14. Yumeya has also published several AI illustration collections.

Shadows of Kyoto: A Glimpse into the Past

Shadows of Kyoto offers readers a glimpse into the hidden aspects of Kyoto, Japan. The manga explores the underbelly of the city, contrasting its serene temples and traditional beauty with darker themes.

Maya Miyazaki: A Prolific Writer

Maya Miyazaki is a Japanese writer known for works such as Holy Knight. Digital Manga Publishing’s Project-H imprint released Holy Knight in English in 2014. In 2012, Holy Knight inspired a two-part OVA (Original Video Animation). Media Blasters released the anime on DVD in 2015 and streamed it on Crunchyroll. A Blu-ray Disc version was released in August 2021.

Miyazaki’s Other Works

Miyazaki’s other works include /BLUSH-DC Himitsu 01 and Gokujyo.: Tales from the Gokuraku Girls Dormitory.

Comic Zenon: A Platform for Diverse Voices

Monthly Comic Zenon is a manga magazine published by Coamix. It is known for featuring a variety of genres and artistic styles, providing a platform for both established and emerging manga creators.

Coamix: Supporting Manga Artists

Coamix is a Japanese manga production company founded in 2000. The company is involved in various aspects of the manga industry, including manga creation, talent management, and publishing.

The Significance of “Namapo”

The term “namapo” used by the character Tomonori is likely derived from 生活保護 (seikatsu hogo), which translates to “public assistance” or “welfare” in Japanese. In Japan, “seikatsu hogo” is a system of social welfare designed to provide a minimum standard of living for those who are unable to support themselves due to financial difficulties, illness, disability, or age.

Social Commentary

The use of “namapo” in the manga suggests that the series may touch upon themes related to poverty, social inequality, and the challenges faced by individuals who rely on public assistance.

Exploring the Dark Side of Society

Warui no wa Shakai da promises to be a thought-provoking series that explores the complexities of modern society. By focusing on a relationship between a woman and a man from the “dark side,” the manga has the potential to shed light on the struggles and realities of those living on the margins.

Themes of Love and Social Issues

Through the lens of a budding romance, the creators may delve into issues such as economic disparity, social stigma, and the search for connection in a world that can often feel isolating.

Anticipation Builds for New Series

The collaboration between Yumeya and Maya Miyazaki has generated considerable excitement among manga fans. Known for their unique artistic styles and storytelling abilities, they are both respected figures in the manga industry. Their combined talents are expected to deliver a compelling and memorable manga series.

Fan Expectations

Fans are eagerly anticipating the development of the characters, the unfolding of their relationship, and the exploration of the social issues that are likely to be woven into the narrative.

Availability

Warui no wa Shakai da is currently available on Coamix’s Monthly Comic Zenon platform.

Expertise and Experience

Both Yumeya and Maya Miyazaki bring significant experience and expertise to this project. Yumeya’s detailed art and storytelling abilities, honed through Shadows of Kyoto, combined with Miyazaki’s narrative skills are promising.

Yumeya’s Artistic Style

Yumeya’s artistic style often features atmospheric settings and emotionally expressive characters, adding depth and nuance to the stories she illustrates.

Miyazaki’s Storytelling Prowess

Miyazaki is known for her ability to create relatable and complex characters, and engaging stories. Her experience in writing manga and creating anime adaptations will contribute to the success of Warui no wa Shakai da.
