Takeru Kirishima, the acclaimed manga artist known for his diverse portfolio, is set to launch a new manga adaptation. The adaptation will be based on Hakubi Kokutō’s light novel series, “Sekigan Renkin Kenshi no Yarinaoshi Kitan” (Tale of the One-Eyed Alchemical Swordsman’s Do-over). The manga is scheduled to debut in the April issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine on February 26th.

A New Hero Rises from the Dungeons

The story of “Sekigan Renkin Kenshi no Yarinaoshi Kitan” unfolds in a world where dungeons have emerged five years prior to the start of the narrative. The protagonist, Yoruichi Yashiro, is a skilled adventurer whose life takes a dramatic turn when he loses an eye while protecting a teammate during a dungeon exploration. Marked as a failure due to his injury, Yoruichi refuses to be defined by his setback. Instead, he resolves to continue his adventures, pioneering a new fighting style to overcome his physical limitation.

From Web Novel to Manga Pages

Hakubi Kokutō initially launched “Sekigan Renkin Kenshi no Yarinaoshi Kitan” as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in April 2023. The story is still ongoing, captivating readers with its blend of adventure, fantasy, and determination. Hobby Japan published the first compiled book volume with illustrations and character designs by Rein Kuwashima, on December 14th, bringing the world and characters of the story to life in a tangible form.

Kirishima’s Impressive Manga Portfolio

Takeru Kirishima has established himself as a versatile and prolific manga artist with a diverse range of works. His previous projects include manga adaptations of light novels, fighting games, and original manga series.

“Brunhild the Dragonslayer”: A Recent Endeavor

Kirishima recently concluded the manga adaptation of Yuiko Agarizaki and Aoaso’s light novel, “Brunhild the Dragonslayer” (Ryū-goroshi no Brunhild), in July 2024. Yen Press has licensed the manga in English, making it accessible to international audiences. The story is based on the light novel written by Yuiko Agarizaki and illustrated by Aoaso that was released under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko label. The manga adaptation of the light novel launched in Monthly Shōnen Ace in October 2022. Kadokawa published the manga’s first volume in April 2023, and released the fourth and final volume on September 25.

Adapting the World of “Melty Blood”

Kirishima is also known for his manga adaptation of “Melty Blood”, a fighting game by French Bread that serves as a follow-up to Type-Moon’s visual novel, “Tsukihime”. The “Melty Blood” manga was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace, starting in 2006. The manga is divided into two parts, the first part, spanning volumes 1-6, follows the original Melty Blood storyline. “2nd ACT” began serialization in the beginning of 2009, and spans volumes 7-9, featuring Miyako (Shiki’s non-blood related cousin) as one of the main protagonists. After volume 9, a sequel titled Melty Blood X began serialization and ran for 12 chapters before ending in 2011.

Original Works and Light Novel Illustrations

In addition to his manga adaptations, Kirishima is the creator of the original manga series “Kanna”, which was published in English by Go! Comi. He also provided the illustrations for Usagi Nakamura’s “Gokudo-kun Manyuki (Gokudo)” light novel series, which inspired a 1999 anime. Media Blasters licensed and released the anime series in North America, introducing Kirishima’s art to a wider audience. The light novel was first serialized by Kadokawa Shoten in their light novel magazine Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko. It was later adapted into a manga in 1995 and released in Dengeki Daioh magazine. An anime adaptation was produced by Trans Arts and aired on TV Tokyo from April 2, 1999 to September 24, 1999, with a total of 26 episodes.
