Production Details and Staff

“CITY The Animation” is directed by Taichi Ishidate at Kyoto Animation. The series boasts a talented team:

  • Color Designer: Kana Miyata
  • Art Director: Shiori Yamazaki
  • Sound Director: Yōta Tsuruoka
  • Photography Director: Kouki Ueda

Storyline

“CITY The Animation” is based on Keiichi Arawi’s gag comedy manga series, which ran in Kodansha’s Morning Magazine from September 2016 to February 2021. The manga was compiled into 13 tankobon volumes. The series is licensed in North America by Vertical.

The anime explores the lives of three college students, Midori Nagumo, Niikura, and Wako Izumi, and other characters living in an ordinary, yet unpredictable city.

Midori Nagumo, a penniless college student, is often in debt and struggling to make ends meet. Her daily life involves dodging her landlady and finding creative ways to get by, sometimes resorting to petty theft or relying on her friends for help.

The series promises a blend of humor, slice-of-life moments, and surreal situations as the characters navigate their daily lives in the extraordinary city.

Kyoto Animation’s Return

“CITY The Animation” marks a significant milestone for Kyoto Animation as their first non-sequel anime in six years. The studio has been working to recover and rebuild following the tragic arson attack in 2019. This new series is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the studio’s staff.

About the Manga Author

Keiichi Arawi is best known for his previous manga series, “Nichijou,” which also received an anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation. Arawi’s works are characterized by their unique blend of absurd humor, quirky characters, and slice-of-life storytelling. “CITY” continues in this tradition, offering a fresh and hilarious take on everyday life.

What to Expect

Fans of Keiichi Arawi’s previous work, “Nichijou,” can expect a similar style of humor and storytelling in “CITY The Animation”. The series will likely feature a mix of relatable everyday situations and over-the-top comedic moments. With Kyoto Animation at the helm, the anime is expected to deliver high-quality animation and a faithful adaptation of the manga’s unique charm.

Release Date

“CITY The Animation” is scheduled to premiere in July 2025, as part of the Summer 2025 anime season.
