Asa Kuwayoshi’s manga series, “Haido!” (Abandoned Roads), has concluded its run in the March issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Cune magazine. The final chapter was published on January 27, 2025, bringing to an end the story of two girls and their shared passion for exploring forgotten places.

A Journey Down Abandoned Roads

“Haido!” centers around Setsuna Yoshinaga, a transfer student known as the “Snow Princess” for her quiet and reserved demeanor. However, Setsuna transforms when the topic shifts to abandoned roads, her face lighting up with enthusiasm. Intrigued by this transformation, her classmate Ringo joins her on expeditions to these forgotten locations.

The manga, launched in March 2023, delicately portrays the budding friendship between Setsuna and Ringo as they explore the hidden beauty and nostalgia embedded within these abandoned spaces. Their adventures uncover not only the physical remnants of the past but also the emotional connections forged through shared experiences.

The Allure of Forgotten Places

“Haido!” distinguishes itself with its unique premise. Instead of focusing on high-stakes action or fantastical adventures, it finds charm in the mundane and overlooked. The abandoned roads become a canvas for exploring themes of friendship, discovery, and the appreciation of hidden beauty.

Setsuna’s fascination with these spaces suggests a deeper connection to the past, perhaps a longing for a simpler time or an appreciation for the stories these roads hold. Ringo, initially drawn to Setsuna’s captivating smile, soon discovers the intrinsic appeal of these forgotten pathways, highlighting the transformative power of shared passions.

Publication Details

Kadokawa published the first compiled book volume of “Haido!” in October 2023, followed by the second volume in July 2024. The third and final volume is scheduled to be released on February 27, 2025.

Asa Kuwayoshi: A Career of Heartwarming Tales

Asa Kuwayoshi is a manga artist known for creating heartwarming and character-driven stories. “Haido!” is not her only successful work.

Granny Girl Hinata-chan

Kuwayoshi is also known for “Granny Girl Hinata-chan (Rōjoteki Shōjo Hinata-chan),” which ran in Coamix’s Monthly Comic Zenon magazine from 2015 to June 2022, culminating in 11 compiled book volumes. This series, which is digitally published in English by KiraKira Media Inc.’s Azuki service, tells the story of a preschooler who possesses the memories of her 88-year-old grandmother.

The Fluffy Mansion Cat and Me

In July 2024, Kuwayoshi launched a new manga titled “Mofu Mofu Yashiki no Neko to Ore (The Fluffy Mansion Cat and Me)” in Shonengahosha’s Nekopanchi magazine, a magazine dedicated to cat-themed stories. This recent work signals Kuwayoshi’s continued dedication to creating stories that resonate with warmth and charm.

Themes and Style

Kuwayoshi’s works often explore themes of nostalgia, intergenerational connections, and the beauty of everyday life. Her characters are often endearing and relatable, drawing readers into their world with a gentle and heartfelt approach. Her art style is characterized by its clean lines, expressive character designs, and a knack for capturing subtle emotions.

Reception and Legacy of Haido!

While “Haido!” may have had a relatively short run, its unique premise and heartwarming narrative have likely resonated with readers who appreciate slice-of-life stories with a touch of nostalgia. The manga’s focus on abandoned roads as a source of beauty and discovery offers a refreshing perspective in a landscape often dominated by fantastical or action-oriented narratives.

Impact on Readers

The story’s appeal lies in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. By showcasing the beauty of forgotten places, “Haido!” encourages readers to appreciate the hidden gems in their own surroundings and to find joy in the simple act of exploration.

A Unique Voice in Manga

Asa Kuwayoshi has carved a niche for herself by creating manga that prioritize emotional connection and gentle storytelling. “Haido!” is a testament to her ability to find beauty in the mundane and to craft stories that resonate with warmth and sincerity. While “Haido!” has ended, fans can look forward to her future works and the continued exploration of heartwarming themes.

The End of a Road, But Not the End of the Journey

The conclusion of “Haido!” marks the end of Setsuna and Ringo’s adventures on abandoned roads, but it also signifies the continuation of Asa Kuwayoshi’s journey as a manga artist. Her ability to create endearing characters and heartwarming stories ensures that her work will continue to captivate readers for years to come. As fans bid farewell to “Haido!”, they eagerly anticipate her future creations and the new worlds she will bring to life.
