The world of Gosho Aoyama, the celebrated creator of Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed), is expanding with a brand-new anime adaptation of his earlier manga series, Yaiba. Shin Samurai-den Yaiba (Yaiba: Samurai Legend) is poised to make its television debut on April 5, 2025, promising a thrilling blend of action, adventure, and Japanese mythology.

Premiering Ahead of a Legend

The new Yaiba anime will air on Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. JST (4:30 a.m. EDT) on YTV, NTV, and affiliated channels throughout Japan. What’s particularly exciting for fans is that it will directly precede Detective Conan‘s 6:00 p.m. (5:00 a.m. EST) timeslot. This back-to-back airing is being promoted as the “Gosho Aoyama Hour,” giving viewers a double dose of Aoyama’s creative genius.

A Second Chance for a Samurai Classic

Yaiba, written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama, was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from 1988 to 1993, spanning 24 tankobon volumes. The manga achieved considerable success, boasting over 17 million copies in circulation by May 2024. An earlier 52-episode anime adaptation, Kenyū Densetsu Yaiba, aired from 1993 to 1994. This new adaptation, produced by Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Spy x Family), marks a fresh take on the beloved story after nearly three decades. The new anime series adaptation has been licensed by Viz Media.

Story of Yaiba

Yaiba Kurogane is a young, adventurous samurai who lives with his father, Kenjuro, in the forest. He knows little else besides how to be a samurai. One day, after being attacked by a troop of gorillas, Yaiba and his father escape to the city, where Yaiba learns he is a legendary warrior. He must confront Takeshi Onimaru, a demonic high-school student, who becomes his rival.

As the story unfolds, Yaiba encounters Takeshi Onimaru, a rival swordsman. Onimaru is humiliated after their battle ends in a stalemate and is lured to a magical katana, which leads him to plan to take over the world with an army of demons. Yaiba and his allies embark on a quest to defeat the demon lord, encountering figures from Japanese history and mythology along the way.

A Talented Team Behind the Scenes

Yaiba: Samurai Legend boasts a skilled production team:

  • Director: Takahiro Hasui (Aikatsu Friends!, Mob Psycho 100 II)
  • Series Scripts: Touko Machida (7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life, The IDOLM@STER)
  • Character Designer & Chief Animation Director: Yoshimichi Kameda (INU-OH)
  • Sub-Character Designer & Main Animator: Takeshi Maenami (Ni no Kuni, Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Beginning of a New Era)
  • Music: Yutaka Yamada (Tokyo Ghoul) and Yoshiaki Dewa (IRODUKU: The World in Colors)

The Cast of Characters

The anime features a talented voice cast, breathing life into the characters:

  • Yaiba Kurogane: Minami Takayama (also known for voicing Conan Edogawa in Detective Conan)
  • Sayaka Mine: Manaka Iwami
  • Takeshi Onimaru: Yoshimasa Hosoya
  • Kenjuro Kurogane: Katsuyuki Konishi
  • Musashi Miyamoto: Junichi Suwabe

Early Screenings

For those eager to get a sneak peek, the first three episodes of Shin Samurai-den Yaiba will be screened early at 10 TOHO CINEMAS locations in Japan on March 13. These screenings will also include a roundtable video featuring Gosho Aoyama, Takahiro Hasui, and Yoshimichi Kameda, offering insights into the making of the anime.

What to Expect From Yaiba: Samurai Legend

  • Action-Packed Sword Fights: Yaiba is known for its dynamic and exciting sword fights, and the new anime promises to deliver plenty of thrilling action sequences.
  • Humor and Adventure: The series blends its action with a healthy dose of humor and lighthearted adventure, making it enjoyable for a wide audience.
  • Japanese Mythology: The story incorporates elements of Japanese mythology, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.
  • Nostalgia: For fans of the original manga and anime, Yaiba: Samurai Legend offers a nostalgic return to a beloved series with updated animation and a fresh perspective.

Gosho Aoyama: More Than Just Detective Conan

While Gosho Aoyama is best known for Detective Conan, Yaiba showcases his versatility as a creator. Yaiba, which translates to “blade,” received the 38th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 1993. The series demonstrates Aoyama’s ability to craft engaging stories with memorable characters, thrilling action, and a touch of humor.

Anime: A Cultural Phenomenon

Japanese anime has become a global cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences of all ages with its diverse genres, compelling storytelling, and unique artistic style. From action-packed adventures to heartwarming slice-of-life stories, anime offers something for everyone. Series such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and many others have achieved widespread popularity.
