Two titans of the anime world, Yōko Kanno and Shōji Kawamori, are joining forces to create a unique hybrid virtual reality short film for the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The project, titled “499-Byō Watashi no Gattai” (“499 Seconds: My Gattai” or “499 Seconds: My Combination”), promises to be a groundbreaking experience blending VR and mixed reality, set to captivate audiences at the “Live Earth Journey” pavilion.

A Cosmic Collaboration

Shōji Kawamori, the self-described “vision creator” renowned for his work on iconic series like Macross and Aquarion, is serving as the general director of the short film. Kawamori’s career was inspired by the first World Expo in Osaka. He cites the event as the beginning of his lifelong exploration of world culture, science, and science fiction. He is also one of the 10 co-producers of the Expo 2025.

Yōko Kanno, the celebrated composer behind the soundtracks for Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Macross Plus, is composing the film’s soundtrack, including the title track “499 seconds.” She also co-wrote the song’s lyrics with Kawamori, creating a truly collaborative effort. Kanno has also composed and arranged “Ray of Water”, the celebration song for the Moonbow Festival, scheduled to be held at Expo 2025 at the Water Plaza.

Immersive Experience

The “Live Earth Journey” pavilion aims to use the latest interactive technologies to emphasize the interconnectedness of all life within the planet’s ecosystem.

“499 Seconds – My Gattai” is designed as an immersive experience for a select group of 30 audience members at a time. Participants will wear VR headsets equipped with built-in cameras, allowing them to journey through a cosmic-scale food chain while seamlessly transitioning between virtual reality and mixed reality environments. The short film aims to convey the concept of “Life is a combination and a transformation!”

Isao Nishigori directs the film. Tim Jensen co-wrote the theme song’s English lyrics. Megumi Nakajima and Haoto perform the song, and Maaya Sakamoto narrates the short.

World Expo 2025: A Stage for Innovation

The World Expo 2025 is scheduled to run from April 13 to October 13 on the man-made Yumeshima island in Osaka Bay. This marks the second time Osaka has hosted a World Expo, following Expo ’70, which took place 55 years prior. One remnant of Expo ’70, the Tower of the Sun, remains a recognizable landmark in Japanese popular culture.

The Expo is expected to be a showcase of cutting-edge technology and international collaboration, with various pavilions and exhibits exploring themes of sustainability, innovation, and global connection. Attendees will also be able to explore the Expo virtually via smartphones, PCs, and VR headsets.

Kawamori’s Vision: Reimagining Past Works

Kawamori has hinted at the possibility of revisiting his earlier stories in new formats within the Expo. While he generally avoids directly redoing his previous works, he is open to exploring them through innovative mediums like the VR experiences planned for Expo 2025. He suggested presenting climactic scenes from Macross within this format.

Other Planned Attractions

Besides the VR short film, the “Live Earth Journey” pavilion also features other attractions, including:

  • The Window of the Universe: A colossal screen showcasing real-time imagery of Earth and in-depth analysis of space content.
  • INOCHI-DAMA: Original designs symbolizing biodiversity.
  • XR Theater: A theater that utilizes the latest XR technology, allowing visitors to experience the “dynamism of life.”
  • ANIMA!: A musical about life.
  • Metamorphose: A drama about life.
  • Robotics Wear: Visitors can use the concept of “Move Your Body + VR” to engage in flying and lifting experiences. The experience will allow the collection of personalized data to propose their ideal Robotics Wear.

Immersive Entertainment at Expo 2025

The Moonbow Festival is also scheduled for Expo 2025. The festival promises an immersive show based on air and water, with fountains, water screen projections, music, lasers, and fire.

A Glimpse into the Future of Entertainment

The collaboration between Yōko Kanno and Shōji Kawamori represents a fusion of musical genius and visionary storytelling, promising an unforgettable experience at the World Expo 2025. The “499 Seconds – My Gattai” VR short film exemplifies the potential of virtual and mixed reality technologies to create immersive and engaging entertainment, offering a glimpse into the future of storytelling. As the Expo approaches, anticipation builds for this groundbreaking project and its contribution to the event’s theme of connecting the world through innovation and shared experiences.
