Episode 6 of “Medalist” dives deeper into the emotional core of the series, exploring both Inori’s insecurities about her late start in figure skating and Tsukasa’s hidden past. Titled “The Night of the First Competition,” the episode, which aired on February 9, 2025, on Japanese television, sees Inori grappling with her ambitions while Tsukasa confronts the ghosts of his failed skating career.

Inori’s Determination Meets Reality

Inspired by Hikaru’s stunning performance at the Novice competition, Inori is more determined than ever to improve. She expresses her desire to Tsukasa to become a star skater like Hikaru, prompting Tsukasa to consider entering her into a competition immediately after she passes her first badge test.

However, Inori is plagued by doubts. Starting later than her peers, she worries about her ability to catch up. This internal conflict is a central theme of the episode. Inori is aware of her disadvantages, and she is upset that she can’t do what others can.

Tsukasa’s Encouragement and a Glimpse into His Past

Tsukasa, recognizing Inori’s struggle, shares his own experiences with her. He aims to reassure her that progress is possible, even with a late start. This leads to a more profound exploration of Tsukasa’s past as a skater.

Flashbacks reveal that Tsukasa got into skating after watching one of Jun’s performances when he was 14. The episode sheds light on his ice dancing career and the failures he experienced. While not drastically altering our understanding of Tsukasa, these details offer a more nuanced perspective on how his past has shaped him and his present relationship with Inori.

Tsukasa’s reluctance to share his past stems from his fear of appearing as though he is trying to live vicariously through Inori. He doesn’t want to burden her with his unfulfilled dreams or give the impression that he sees her as a replacement for his own lost potential.

The Mark of a True Athlete

Despite Inori’s self-doubt, Tsukasa emphasizes the importance of recognizing her achievements. He reminds her that her victory proves that she is a “real athlete” and that she shouldn’t let anyone diminish her accomplishments because of her late start.

Inori had a win which gave her clearer vision of what she wants as a skater. Tsukasa reminds Inori that there will always be people who look down on her, but she cannot let those people get to her.

A Budding Rivalry and Future Challenges

“Medalist” Episode 6 also hints at future challenges and rivalries. After Inori gets a reality check from Jun, she asks Tsukasa if she can take part in another tough competition. Tsukasa vows to coach Inori so she can surpass Hikaru, creating a challenge between him and coach Jun Yodaka.

Where to Watch

For viewers in Japan, “Medalist” Episode 6 aired on TV Asahi (NUMAnimation slot), CS TV Asahi, and BS Asahi. It is also available on Japanese streaming platforms such as ABEMA and Niconico. International viewers can stream the episode on Disney+.
