This announcement marks a significant step forward for the anime, which was revealed in January 2025 and is based on the popular manga series serialized since 2018.

Ryōsuke Shirakawa and Taito Ban Join Fermat no Ryōri Anime

On March 5, 2025, the official website for the Fermat no Ryōri anime announced the casting of Ryōsuke Shirakawa as Gaku Kitada and Taito Ban as Kai Asakura. These two actors will be taking on the lead roles in the series, bringing to life the central characters from Yūgo Kobayashi’s manga.

  • Ryōsuke Shirakawa as Gaku Kitada: Shirakawa will play the role of Gaku Kitada, a gifted mathematics scholar who experiences setbacks in his aspirations to become a mathematician. After abandoning his initial dream, Gaku’s life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Kai Asakura.

  • Taito Ban as Kai Asakura: Ban will voice Kai Asakura, a young and exceptionally talented chef. Kai runs his own food business and introduces Gaku to the world of cooking, setting the stage for their collaborative journey.

Fermat no Ryōri: From Manga to Anime

Yūgo Kobayashi’s Fermat no Ryōri has captured the hearts of many since its debut in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine in September 2018. The manga tells the story of Gaku Kitada, a brilliant mathematics student, and Kai Asakura, a chef, exploring how their talents intertwine in the culinary world.

Manga Origins

  • Serialization: The manga series began its serialization in September 2018 in Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine.
  • Volumes: Kodansha has released four tankōbon volumes of the manga, with the fourth volume published on September 28, 2023.
  • Circulation: The manga has reached an impressive 23 million copies in circulation, attesting to its popularity and wide readership.

Storyline

The story centers around Gaku Kitada, a talented mathematician who faces disappointment when he fails to achieve his dream. He meets Kai Asakura, a chef, and joins him in a new endeavor, blending mathematics with culinary arts. The series explores themes of passion, discovery, and the intersection of seemingly disparate fields.

Anime Adaptation

In January 2025, it was announced that Fermat no Ryōri would be adapted into an anime television series. This announcement was celebrated by fans and the manga’s creator, Yūgo Kobayashi.

  • Kobayashi’s Reaction: Kobayashi expressed his appreciation and astonishment that the series was chosen for an anime adaptation, especially considering the limited number of volumes.
  • Previous Adaptation: Before the anime, Fermat no Ryōri was adapted into a live-action TV drama that aired on TBS from October to December 2023, comprising 10 episodes.

Live-Action TV Drama

Prior to the anime adaptation, Fermat no Ryōri was adapted into a live-action television drama, which aired on TBS from October 20 to December 22, 2023. The drama consisted of 10 episodes and starred Fumiya Takahashi as Gaku Kitada and Jun Shison as Kai Asakura. The theme song for the drama was “Re Houteishiki” (Re方程式) by 10-Feet.

Yūgo Kobayashi: The Creator

Yūgo Kobayashi is the author and illustrator of Fermat no Ryōri. He is also known for creating the manga series Aoashi, which has also been adapted into an anime. Kobayashi launched Aoashi in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine in January 2015. His works often explore themes of growth, passion, and the pursuit of excellence.

Potential Impact and Themes

Fermat no Ryōri blends the worlds of mathematics and cuisine, presenting a unique narrative that could resonate with a wide audience. The anime is expected to explore themes of:

  • Discovery: Gaku’s journey from mathematics to cooking symbolizes the discovery of new passions and talents.
  • Collaboration: The partnership between Gaku and Kai highlights the power of collaboration between individuals with different skill sets.
  • Innovation: The application of mathematical principles to cooking showcases innovation and creativity.

The anime adaptation of Fermat no Ryōri is highly anticipated, with fans eager to see how the characters and story will be brought to life. The casting of Ryōsuke Shirakawa and Taito Ban in the lead roles has generated excitement, and further details about the anime are eagerly awaited.
