Takara Tomy is set to release Transformers: Wild King, a new net series of short anime episodes, on March 26th, marking the return of a domestically produced Transformers anime in Japan after a decade. The series will stream on Takara Tomy’s YouTube channel.

Transformers Returns to Japanese Anime: Wild King Series Details

Transformers: Wild King is significant as the franchise’s first anime series produced primarily in Japan in ten years, since Q Transformers: Kaettekita Convoy no Nazo which ran for two seasons in 2015.

Key Features of Transformers: Wild King

  • Release Date: March 26, 2025
  • Streaming Platform: Takara Tomy’s YouTube Channel
  • Number of Episodes: 14
  • Episode Length: Approximately 6 minutes each

Production and Animation

While DLE Inc. animated Q Transformers: Kaettekita Convoy no Nazo, Polygon Pictures handled the animation for Allspark Animation and Rooster Teeth’s Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy, which streamed on Netflix from 2020 to 2021. Studio Trigger also animated the “Transformers 40th Anniversary Special Movie” video last year, and there have been various Flash-style and stop-motion Transformers shorts from Yūzō Yamamoto, Saori Watanabe, and others. The studio animating Transformers: Wild King has not been officially announced.

Elementros: A New World for Transformers

The anime is set in Elementros, a new world populated by transforming animals and dinosaurs called “Energy Beasts”. This setting introduces a fresh dynamic to the Transformers universe, blending familiar robot transformations with animalistic and prehistoric elements.

Story and Characters

  • Optimus Prime follows Megatron to Elementros.
  • Lightlong, a native of Elementros, aids Optimus, explaining the Energy Beasts’ affinity for five element energies: fire, water, earth, nature, and lightning.
  • Optimus and Lightlong combine to unleash the power of the Wild King when Megatron turns against Optimus.

“Wildocking”: The Combination Transformation System

A key feature of Transformers: Wild King is “Wildocking,” a unique combination transformation system where Energy Beasts merge with Optimus Prime and Megatron. This fusion creates dynamic combinations of animals, dinosaurs, vehicles, and robots, offering captivating transformation sequences designed for younger audiences.

The Energy Beasts

The Energy Beasts are new characters who transform into animals and dinosaurs.

Confirmed Energy Beasts include:

  • Rightol: A giraffe.
  • Hydrophant: An elephant.
  • Captain Vulca: A T. rex.
  • Reefback: A triceratops.
  • Ignite Bite: A wolf (or possibly a lion).
  • Sbilichuan: A spinosaurus.

Toy Line Launching Alongside the Anime

Takara Tomy is releasing a new toy line on April 26th that mirrors the character designs from the anime. These toys feature simplified transformation mechanics, balancing ease of play with engaging transformations suitable for both kids and longtime fans.

Key Features of the Toy Line

  • Designed for All Ages: Simplified transformations for easy play.
  • Interchangeable Parts: Energy Beasts serve as arms and legs.
  • Combination Transformation: Energy Beasts merge with Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Toy Line Details and Pricing

  • Energy Masters (Optimus Prime & Megatron): 4950 yen / $34 USD
  • Energy Beasts: 2750 yen / $19 USD
  • Wild Docking Sets (Optimus Prime & Light Long / Megatron & Captain Volca): 7480 yen / $52 USD

Transformers: A Franchise Celebrating 40 Years

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, the Transformers franchise has experienced renewed interest from younger fans. This surge in popularity is attributed to the releases of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) and the upcoming Transformers One (2024).

Recent Transformers Releases

  • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts: Released in June 2023 (August 2023 in Japan as Transformers: Beast Awakening).
  • Transformers One: New animated film prequel, released in September 2024.

Expert Perspective

Daniel Warren Johnson, comic book writer and artist known for his dynamic and emotive storytelling style, particularly in action-oriented narratives, lends his expertise to understanding the appeal of Transformers. With works like Murder Falcon and Extremity, Johnson’s ability to blend high-octane action with compelling character development makes him uniquely suited to comment on the Transformers franchise.

Johnson notes that the enduring appeal of Transformers lies in its blend of:

  • Nostalgia: Connecting with audiences who grew up with the original series and toys.
  • Relatability: The Autobots and Decepticons represent familiar human struggles and conflicts.
  • Spectacle: The visually stunning transformations and battles continue to captivate audiences across generations.

He suggests that Transformers: Wild King, with its return to Japanese-produced anime and incorporation of new elements like Energy Beasts, has the potential to reignite the franchise’s popularity. The “Wildocking” concept, in particular, adds a fresh layer of excitement and collectibility to the toy line.

A New Era for Transformers Anime?

Transformers: Wild King marks a significant moment for the Transformers franchise, potentially paving the way for future anime series and toy lines that blend classic elements with innovative concepts. Whether it achieves widespread international acclaim remains to be seen, but its launch is highly anticipated by Transformers fans worldwide.
