The upcoming anime film, A New Dawn, has announced the addition of voice actors Miyu Irino and Takashi Okabe to its cast. This news comes as anticipation builds for the film’s release in 2025. A New Dawn, a Japanese-French co-production, is directed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, known for their background art in acclaimed films like Garden of Words and Your Name.

Story and Production Details

A New Dawn is an original story centered around the Taitou Fireworks factory, which is facing closure after 330 years of business. The narrative follows three young individuals who have grown up near the factory as they encounter Shuhari, a legendary “phantom fireworks shop.” The film explores themes of overcoming adversity, identity, and environmental challenges.

Key production staff include:

  • Director & Writer: Yoshitoshi Shinomiya
  • Character Designer: Utsushita (Minakata Laboratory)
  • Art Director: Akiko Majima
  • Music: Shuta Hasunuma
  • Production: Asmik Ace and Miyu Productions

Casting News: Okabe and Irino Join the Team

Takashi Okabe will make his voice acting debut as Eitarou Tatewaki, the missing father of the protagonist, Keitaro. Eitarou was a skilled fireworks craftsman who led the Obito Fireworks Shop. His legacy profoundly impacts the destinies of his son and Keitaro’s childhood friend, Shikimori Kaoru. Okabe shared his excitement and challenges in his first voice acting role, noting the difficulty of synchronizing emotions with movements.

Miyu Irino will voice Tatewaki Sentaro, also known as “Chichi,” Keitaro’s older brother and Kaoru’s childhood friend. Irino expressed his honor in participating in Shinomiya’s first feature-length animation, drawn to the film’s unique atmosphere.

Other announced cast members include:

  • Riku Hagiwara as Keitaro Obinata
  • Kotone Furukawa as Kaoru Shikimori

Plot Overview: Fireworks, Family, and Identity

A New Dawn delves into the lives of Keitaro, Kaoru, and Sentaro against the backdrop of a struggling fireworks factory. Keitaro is determined to create a fantastic fireworks display in place of his missing father. Kaoru has left their hometown for Tokyo to pursue her own path.

The story takes place six years after Keitaro secluded himself in the closed-down factory, driven by the illusion of his father. The film explores how these characters confront extreme weather, disasters, and environmental issues while forging their identities.

Shinomiya’s Vision: Inspired by the 2011 Earthquake

Director Yoshitoshi Shinomiya drew inspiration from the evolving Japanese landscape following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. His personal connection to the subject matter adds depth and authenticity to the film’s themes. Shinomiya’s background as a painter is evident in the film’s visuals, promising a visually stunning experience for audiences.

Release and Promotion

A New Dawn is scheduled for release in Japan in 2025. A teaser trailer and visual have already been released, offering a glimpse into the film’s world and characters. The film was also selected for the “Animation Day” Annecy Animation Showcase at the 77th Cannes International Film Festival in May 2024.
