What is PuniRunes?

PuniRunes is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Takara Tomy. It centers around small, squishy creatures called PuniRunes that live with a young girl named Yuka. The franchise includes toys, an anime series, and other merchandise. The unique aspect of the PuniRunes toys is the hole where you can put your finger to “pet” the soft creature inside.

Story and Characters

The anime follows the daily life of PuniRunes and their interactions with Yuka, a fourth-grade girl who loves soft, squishy things. The PuniRunes are mysterious creatures who love to be coddled. The first season shows Yuka and her fluffy pals discovering a secret garden behind the bakery. They befriend magical plants, learning about nature while helping her parents create enchanted pastries that bring joy to the whole town.

Key characters include:

  • Yuka: A bright and active elementary school girl who loves squishy things and lives together with Airun. Voiced by Yuna Taniguchi.
  • Airun: Full of curiosity and has a positive attitude. Loves to be punipuni-petted by humans and is very fond of food. Voiced by Megumi Han.
  • Enerun: Always vibrant and full of energy, good at sports, but can be a little scatterbrained. Gets along best with Airun. Voiced by Mikako Komatsu.
  • Raburun: Popular with everyone and something of a star among PuniRunes. Loves cute things and tends to be a favorite with Babypunis and animals. Voiced by Aya Uchida.
  • Kuurun: Always cool, calm, and collected. Loves to dress up and keep things tidy, with a cool manner that belies a very sweet and kind character. Voiced by Hina Kino.
  • Ururun: A real crybaby who cries when surprised, but is very good at drawing. Voiced by Tomohiro Yamaguchi.
  • Bebipuni: A baby PuniRunes. Voiced by Atsushi Yamazaki and Shiina Udagawa.

Production Staff

The anime boasts a talented team:

  • Chief Director (Season 1): Kunihiko Yuyama (Pokémon, Fairy Princess Minky Momo)
  • Director: Kentaro Yamaguchi
  • Series Composition: Gigaemon Ichikawa (Chikasugi Idol Akae-chan, The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made, A Galaxy Next Door)
  • Character Design: Sayuri Ichiishi (Pokémon, Tamagotchi!)
  • Music: Takahiro Obata

Theme Song

The theme song for the series is “Puni Puni PuniRunes Punix Version” performed by Nanahira.

Previous Seasons

The first season of PuniRunes aired from October 2022 to March 2023 on TV Tokyo and TV Osaka. The second season debuted in October of the previous year. Spin Master began streaming the anime on YouTube in September 2024.

Where to Watch

You can catch PuniRunes on TV Tokyo and its affiliates starting July 5th. Spin Master also streams the anime on YouTube. Other platforms where you might find the series include Aniwatch.to and HiAnime.to.

PuniRunes Toys

Spin Master is releasing the PuniRunes toy line in the United States. These digital pets have a unique feature: a hole where you can put your finger to “pet” the soft creature inside. Takara Tomy also produces a variety of PuniRunes toys, focusing on the unique texture of the characters. These include the “PuniRunes Puni-Plus,” a remake of the original LCD care toy, and “PuniRunes Punipuni Friends Surprise Puni Happy” collectible figures.
