Hiroyuki Etō’s beloved manga series, Magical Circle Guru-Guru 2, is drawing to a close with its next volume. For fans of the comedic fantasy adventure, this marks the end of a long and enchanting journey that began decades ago with the original Magical Circle Guru-Guru.

A Journey Through the World of Guru-Guru

Magical Circle Guru-Guru is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Etō. It was originally serialized in Enix’s Monthly Shōnen Gangan from 1992 to 2003. The series gained immense popularity for its comedic take on the fantasy genre, particularly its parody of early role-playing video games (RPGs) like the Dragon Quest series.

The story revolves around Nike, a young boy forced by his parents to become a hero, and Kukuri, a young girl and the last of the Migu Migu tribe who practices a mysterious magic called “Guru-Guru.” Together, they embark on a quest to defeat the Demon Lord Giri, traveling through a whimsical world filled with quirky characters, bizarre monsters, and unpredictable magic.

The Original Series: A Parody of RPGs

The original Magical Circle Guru-Guru series spanned 16 volumes and captivated readers with its lighthearted humor and clever references to RPG tropes. The series was praised for its unique blend of comedy and adventure, making it accessible to younger audiences while still appealing to older fans of the genre.

Anime Adaptations: Bringing the Magic to Life

The manga’s popularity led to several anime adaptations, further expanding its fanbase. The first anime series, produced by Nippon Animation, aired from 1994 to 1995 and covered the first four volumes of the manga. It was followed by a theatrical film in 1996 and a second anime series, Doki Doki Legend Magical Circle Guru-Guru, in 2000, which adapted volumes 5 to 11 of the manga. A remake anime series was produced in 2017.

Magical Circle Guru-Guru 2: A New Chapter

In 2012, Hiroyuki Etō launched a second manga series, Magical Circle Guru-Guru 2, serialized in Gangan Online. This sequel continued the adventures of Nike and Kukuri, introducing new characters, challenges, and mysteries. As of June 2024, Magical Circle Guru-Guru 2 has spanned 19 volumes, further enriching the world and lore established in the original series.

Hiroyuki Etō: The Master of Magical Comedy

Hiroyuki Etō, the creator of Magical Circle Guru-Guru, is a multifaceted artist with a diverse range of interests and influences. Born in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, Etō’s artistic journey began with a passion for rock music and a fascination with the works of romance manga artist Yukiko Oshima.

Early Influences and Career

After graduating from high school, Etō attended Musashino Art University, where he joined the Manga Research Club and began submitting comics to various publications. He made his professional debut in 1985 with the work Watch Store Lady SEKUNDEN ZEIGER GENT TICK TICK TICK, published under the name Hiroyuki Ninotaka.

A Break and Return to Manga

Following a few early works, Etō briefly left the manga industry to work as a clerk at an imported record store. During this time, he continued to contribute to game magazines, providing illustrations and articles. In 1990, he returned to manga creation, joining the Dragon Quest 4 Cut Cartoon Theater corner in Enix magazine, where his comedic talent shone through.

A Love for Cats, Machines, and the Cosmos

Etō’s interests extend beyond manga and music. He is known to be a cat lover, having raised cats for many years. One of his cats, which he nicknamed “cat with a terrible face,” even made appearances in the Magical Circle Guru-Guru manga. Etō also has a fascination with machines, space, aliens, and mysteries, elements that occasionally appear in his works.

The Legacy of Magical Circle Guru-Guru

Magical Circle Guru-Guru has left an indelible mark on the manga and anime landscape. Its influence can be seen in numerous other works that blend comedy and fantasy. The series’ enduring popularity is a testament to Hiroyuki Etō’s creativity and storytelling ability.

A Timeless Tale

Magical Circle Guru-Guru‘s themes of friendship, courage, and the power of laughter resonate with audiences of all ages. The series’ ability to poke fun at RPG tropes while still delivering a heartwarming and engaging story has solidified its place as a classic in the genre.

The End of an Era

As Magical Circle Guru-Guru 2 approaches its conclusion, fans can look back on the series with fondness and appreciation. The adventures of Nike and Kukuri have brought joy and laughter to countless readers and viewers around the world. While the journey may be ending, the magic of Magical Circle Guru-Guru will continue to enchant generations to come.
