The anime adaptation of Saka and Chorefuji’s light novel series, Once Upon a Witch’s Death (Aru Majo ga Shinu Made: Owari no Kotoba to Hajimari no Namida), is set to charm English-speaking audiences with its newly announced English dub! Crunchyroll has revealed the cast and debut date, so prepare to dive into a world of magic, tears, and heartfelt connections.

A Magical Premiere

The English dub of Once Upon a Witch’s Death will begin streaming on Crunchyroll on April 22, 2025. This gives fans a chance to experience the story with a fresh take, brought to life by a talented cast of voice actors.

Meet the English Voice Cast

Here’s a look at the voice actors who will be lending their talents to the English dub:

  • Linda Young as Faust
  • Reshel Mae as Fine
  • Naya Moreno as Shirofukuro

The dub is being directed by Helena Walstrom, with Samantha Herek producing. Clayton Browning is in charge of adapting the English script, while Matt Grounds serves as the mixer, and Jameson Outlaw as the engineer.

What’s the Story About?

Once Upon a Witch’s Death follows Meg, an apprentice witch who discovers on her seventeenth birthday that she only has one year to live. Her teacher, the ancient witch Faust, reveals a way to break the death curse: collect tears of joy and use them to grow the seed of life. To accomplish this, Meg must leave her sheltered life and venture into the world, meeting new people, forming friendships, and experiencing both joyous and heart-wrenching moments.

Yen Press, which publishes the English version of the light novels, describes the story as a journey where Meg learns that “the most important lessons for a witch are bright, sweet, and somewhat heart-wrenching.”

Production Team

The anime is directed by Atsushi Nigorikawa (A Destructive God Sits Next to Me, Beast Tamer) at EMT Squared. Yuki Shizuku (Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout) is adapting Chorefuji’s character designs for animation. Keiichirō Ōchi (Adachi and Shimamura, The Quintessential Quintuplets) is handling the series composition.

Japanese Voice Cast

The series originally premiered in Japan on April 1, 2025, on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, AT-X, and BS11. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the anime as it airs.

Other Adaptations

Once Upon a Witch’s Death has also been adapted into a manga series by Kenu Amearare, which is serialized in Dengeki Comic Regulus magazine.

A Tale of Tears and Joy

With its blend of fantasy, adventure, and emotional depth, Once Upon a Witch’s Death promises to be a captivating anime.
