Akitaka’s manga series, Sumigomori no Sumijo Maō wa Saikyō Jūsha ni Koikogaremasu (The Charcoal Demon Queen Nestling in Charcoal is in Love with her Strongest Follower), has reached its conclusion. The final chapter was published in the May issue of Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker magazine on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Series Overview

Sumigomori no Sumijo Maō wa Saikyō Jūsha ni Koikogaremasu is a romantic comedy manga series by Akitaka. It launched in January 2024 in Monthly Gangan Joker.

Story Premise

The story centers around Sumi, a human student attending a magic school in the human realm. His life takes an unexpected turn when a servant from the demon realm appears before him, informing him that he has been chosen as a new servant to the demon queen. The manga explores the developing relationship between the demon queen, whose “heart of charcoal catches fire from the flame of love,” and her new human servant, leading to a romantic comedy narrative.

Publication

Square Enix published the first compiled book volume of the manga on August 21, 2024, and the second volume on November 21, 2024.

Akitaka’s Previous Works

Akitaka has worked on several other manga series, including:

  • Rokujō Hitoma no Majo Life (A Witch’s Life in a Six-Tatami Room): This manga launched in Monthly Gangan Joker in February 2020 and ended in June 2022. Square Enix published the fifth and final volume in August 2022. A one-shot version of the manga was published in Monthly Gangan Joker in March 2019.
  • Urami Koi, Koi, Urami Koi: This manga ended in July 2019.
  • Umineko When They Cry: Akitaka drew the fifth episode (End of the Golden Witch) of this manga series. Yen Press publishes the manga in English.
