Get ready for more NEET shenanigans! The fourth season of Mr. Osomatsu (Osomatsu-san), the wildly popular anime series based on Fujio Akatsuka’s classic manga Osomatsu-kun, has a new teaser trailer and visual to get fans hyped. The new season is set to premiere in July 2025, and promises to deliver more of the same chaotic, adult-oriented comedy that has made the series a hit.

What is Mr. Osomatsu?

Mr. Osomatsu is a comedy anime television series produced by Pierrot, based on Fujio Akatsuka’s 1962 manga series, Osomatsu-kun. The original Osomatsu-kun followed the mischievous Matsuno sextuplets as 10-year-olds. Mr. Osomatsu reimagines the brothers as adults – lazy, unemployed, and utterly hopeless NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). The series celebrates the 80th birthday of creator Fujio Akatsuka.

A Brief History of the Matsuno Brothers

The Matsuno brothers have a long and storied history in Japanese pop culture:

  • Osomatsu-kun Manga (1962-1969): The original manga series by Fujio Akatsuka, which ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday and other magazines. It revolved around the Matsuno sextuplets and their comedic misadventures.
  • Osomatsu-kun Anime (1966-1967): The first anime adaptation, produced by Studio Zero.
  • Osomatsu-kun Anime (1988-1989): A second anime series, produced by Studio Pierrot. This series saw Iyami and Chibita gain popularity.
  • Mr. Osomatsu Anime (2015-Present): A new anime series by Pierrot, which began airing in October 2015 to celebrate Akatsuka’s 80th birthday. The series follows the Matsuno siblings as adults.
  • Films: Mr. Osomatsu has also spawned several anime films, including Eiga no Osomatsu-san (2019), Mr. Osomatsu: Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu (2022), and Mr. Osomatsu: The Soul’s Takoyaki Party and the Legendary Sleepover Party (2023).
  • Other Media: Besides the anime, the Mr. Osomatsu franchise includes manga adaptations, novels, video games, stage plays, and even a live-action film.

What to Expect from Season 4

Here’s what we know about the upcoming season:

  • Premiere Date: July 2025
  • Studio: Pierrot Films (rebranded second studio of Pierrot)
  • Director: Yoshinori Odaka (director of the Osomatsu-san ~Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu~ film)
  • Series Composition: Shū Matsubara
  • Character Design: Eiji Abiko
  • Voice Cast: The original voice cast is returning to reprise their roles as the sextuplets:
    • Takahiro Sakurai as Osomatsu
    • Yūichi Nakamura as Karamatsu
    • Hiroshi Kamiya as Choromatsu
    • Jun Fukuyama as Ichimatsu
    • Daisuke Ono as Jyushimatsu
    • Miyu Irino as Todomatsu

The Teaser

The official website for the Mr. Osomatsu anime revealed a new teaser trailer and teaser visual on Friday, April 25, 2025, for the show’s fourth season. The video teases, “Our good-for-nothing best summer is finally here… just kidding.” The teaser visual shows the Matsuno sextuplets relaxing inside a bus.

Who Are The Matsuno Sextuplets?

The series revolves around the Matsuno sextuplets. In Mr. Osomatsu, the brothers are depicted as being ten years older than their original counterparts. All of the brothers have now grown up into lazy NEETs, with each brother having developed their own distinguishing personality:

  • Osomatsu: The eldest and self-proclaimed leader, Osomatsu is an avid gambler who enjoys pachinko and betting on horses. He often wears red.
  • Karamatsu: The second-born, Karamatsu believes himself to be the coolest and most popular brother. He often adds English words into his sentences.
  • Choromatsu: Considered the “voice of reason,” Choromatsu is an otaku with a passion for idols.
  • Ichimatsu: Ichimatsu is cynical, often seen with cats, and struggles with social interaction.
  • Jyushimatsu: The hyperactive and eccentric brother, Jyushimatsu loves baseball and is known for his unpredictable behavior.
  • Todomatsu: The youngest, Todomatsu is tech-savvy and enjoys socializing. He is sometimes seen as the most “normal” of the brothers.

Why is Mr. Osomatsu So Popular?

Mr. Osomatsu struck a chord with audiences for several reasons:

  • Nostalgia: The series is a revival of a classic manga and anime, tapping into nostalgia for older fans.
  • Relatability: The show’s portrayal of NEETs and their struggles resonated with young adults in Japan and worldwide.
  • Parody and Humor: Mr. Osomatsu is known for its raunchy comedy, surreal humor, and parodies of popular culture.
  • Character Dynamics: The unique personalities of the sextuplets and their interactions create comedic situations.
  • Adult-Oriented: Unlike the original Osomatsu-kun, Mr. Osomatsu is geared towards an older audience, with more mature themes and humor.

Where to Watch

The previous three seasons of Mr. Osomatsu, as well as the Mr. Osomatsu movie, are currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.

Final Thoughts

With its unique blend of nostalgia, adult humor, and relatable characters, Mr. Osomatsu has become a cultural phenomenon. The announcement of Season 4 has generated excitement among fans, who are eagerly anticipating the return of the Matsuno sextuplets and their chaotic adventures. The new season is directed by Yoshinori Odaka at animation studio Pierrot Films. Shū Matsubara is in charge of series scripts, and Eiji Abiko is designing the characters.
