The Shinsei Galverse NFT project is making a splash in the anime world with its upcoming anime adaptation, slated to premiere in Summer 2025. Born from a successful NFT collection featuring 8,888 unique “badass Gals,” the project has garnered significant attention for its blend of 90s anime nostalgia, gyaru subculture, and Web3 elements. Here’s a breakdown of what we know about the anime, including the creative team, plot, and the seven cast members revealed so far.
What is Shinsei Galverse?
Shinsei Galverse began as an NFT project launched in April 2022 by Ayaka Ohira and her team, Jack Baldwin, and Devin Mancuso. The project quickly became Japan’s first breakout Web3 success, topping OpenSea’s NFT rankings shortly after its release. The anime aims to capture a new slice of possibility in the Japanese anime scene, transcending niche “otaku” culture and merging with the virtual world. The strength of the Galverse studio is that the 8,000-strong fandom constantly contributes and helps throw ideas, from tracking down voice actors for the anime to naming a planet or a character. The project provides many opportunities for people to have fun and the immense support from the Web3 NFT community is non-negligible.
A Unique Aesthetic and Story
Inspired by the anime aesthetic of the early Heisei period in the 90s, Shinsei Galverse features highly saturated colors, sharply outlined characters, and a nostalgic feel. However, it also distinguishes itself by portraying female characters beyond traditional stereotypes. The anime is directed by Ayaka Ōhira, who has a background in creating music videos and artwork for artists like m-flo, YOASOBI, Hatsune Miku, and Tove Lo.
The story revolves around Zero, a mysterious cosmic entity who crash-lands on the war-torn planet Amatera. Suffering from amnesia, Zero joins Ring, a resistance leader, to uncover the truth behind the Gevuran invaders and her own cosmic identity as a “Galverse.” Together, they face an epic confrontation spanning space and time.
Themes of Diversity and Inclusion
Shinsei Galverse explores themes of diversity and inclusion through its character designs, breaking down traditional boundaries and stereotypes. Director Ayaka Hira envisions a world free from discrimination, where anyone can be the main character regardless of appearance. The original NFTs featured over 2,000 individual traits across 22 layers, allowing for unique and varied character designs.
The Plot
Long ago, harmony across the galaxy was maintained by a sacred star known as the Mother Planet. That peace was shattered when the Mother mysteriously exploded and vanished without a trace which plunged the galaxy into chaos and conflict. From the scattered remnants of the Mother Planet, new beings were born—sentient fragments known as the Galverse.
Now, these Galverse girls, each imbued with extraordinary powers and an unstoppable gal spirit, rise to confront the evil organization “Space End Society” and begin to uncover the truth behind the galaxy’s collapse and the fate of the Mother Planet itself.
