The upcoming anime adaptation of Tarō Yuri’s horror-comedy manga, “Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary” (Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai), has just released its first promotional video, unveiling the main cast and staff behind the series. This spine-chilling yet heartwarming tale is set to premiere, though a specific release date is yet to be confirmed.

A Glimpse into Kindergarten Horror

“Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary” centers around Kaya-chan, a notorious troublemaker in her kindergarten. Unbeknownst to the adults around her, Kaya possesses a secret ability: she can see and vanquish evil spirits with a single punch! When Chie-sensei is assigned to supervise Kaya, she discovers this hidden power and the pair embark on a series of supernatural adventures.

Seven Seas Entertainment, which has licensed the manga in English, describes the story as follows: “Are you braver than a kindergartner? Find out with this horror manga that takes place in the most unlikely of places–and don’t miss the upcoming anime! Kaya-chan is a notorious problem child in her kindergarten, but none of the adults know her secret–till Chie-sensei is put in charge and learns of Kaya-chan’s hidden ability to see evil spirits and vanquish them with a punch! What will happen to this five-year-old who gets in trouble when she’s only trying to help?”

Meet the Main Cast

The newly released trailer introduces the main voice cast who will bring these characters to life:

  • Azusa Tachibana as Kaya-chan: Tachibana lends her voice to the spirited and supernaturally gifted Kaya-chan.
  • Maaya Uchida as Chie-sensei: Uchida voices Chie-sensei, the compassionate teacher who discovers Kaya’s secret and becomes her ally.

The Creative Team

The anime adaptation is being brought to life by a talented team of creatives at East Fish Studio:

  • Director: Hiroshi Ikehata (known for “Dark Gathering”)
  • Series Composition: Shigeru Murakoshi (“Ninja Kamui”)
  • Character Design: Taro Yamada & Hiroyuki Moriguchi
  • Sound Director: Yukio Nagasaki
  • Music: KOHTA YAMAMOTO & Shun Narita (“Dark Gathering”)
  • Animation Studio: EAST FISH STUDIO

Manga Origins

The original “Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary” manga is written and illustrated by Tarō Yuri. It began serialization on Shinchosha’s Kurage Bunch manga website in April 2022. As of November 2024, the series has been collected into six tankōbon volumes. Volume 7 is scheduled for release on June 9, 2025. Seven Seas Entertainment will begin publishing the English translation of the manga in April 2025.

What to Expect

“Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary” promises a unique blend of horror and comedy, set against the backdrop of a seemingly innocent kindergarten. With its endearing characters, supernatural themes, and a touch of heartwarming friendship, this anime is sure to captivate audiences. Fans of series like “Mieruko-chan” and “Dark Gathering” may find themselves drawn to this series. The manga has been described as “Mieruko-chan, but in kindergarten!” Kaya-chan is able to see ghosts and ghouls, there’s something supernaturally amok at her home, and even the way the monsters are drawn calls to mind that other series. The main difference is that Kaya is much more proactive than Miko, boldly stepping into the fray to protect others from menaces that they can’t see.”

Where to Watch

As of today, June 6, 2025, the release date and streaming platforms for “Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary” have not yet been announced. Keep an eye on Crunchyroll and other anime news sources for updates.
