The upcoming anime adaptation of “There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…” (Japanese: わたしが恋人になれるわけないじゃん、ムリムリ！ （※ムリじゃなかった!?）, Hepburn: Watashi ga Koibito ni Nareru Wakenaijan, Muri Muri! (*Muri Janakatta!?)), also known as WataNare (わたなれ) for short, is set to premiere on July 7, 2025. A new promotional video has been released, revealing additional cast members and previews of the theme songs.
What’s the Story?
“There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…” is a yuri (girls’ love) romantic comedy that follows the story of Renako Amaori, an introverted girl determined to reinvent herself in high school. She meets Mai Oduka, a popular and confident model, and the two form an unexpected connection. However, Renako’s world is turned upside down when Mai confesses her love. Renako believes they’re better off as friends, but Mai is determined to prove they’re meant to be lovers.

A new trailer and key visual have been released, showcasing the main characters and offering a glimpse into the anime’s comedic and romantic moments. The trailer also previews the opening and ending theme songs.

The opening theme song is “Muri Muri Evolution” (The Impossible Theory of Evolution) performed by Nanawo Akari. The ending theme song is “Mayocchauwa” by Philosophy no Dance.

Light Novel and Manga
“There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…” began as a light novel series written by Teren Mikami and illustrated by Eku Takeshima. Shueisha has published seven volumes since February 2020 under their Dash X Bunko imprint. A manga adaptation with art by Musshu was launched on Shueisha’s Dash X Comic section of the Niconico Seiga website in May 2020. Both the light novel and manga are licensed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.
