What’s the Story About?

Uglymug, Epicfighter follows the story of Shigeru Yoshioka, a man with striking looks that are, to put it mildly, not conventionally attractive. As Square Enix describes, “His looks are -255, touching girls causes him pain, and sexual acts will literally tear him apart.” Shigeru’s journey begins when he finds himself transported to another world.

In this new world, Shigeru is presented with a unique opportunity: he can sacrifice his already unfortunate appearance in exchange for immense power. He takes the deal, becoming incredibly strong but also incredibly ugly. The series explores what Shigeru can gain in this new world, despite his inconveniences.

From Web Novel to Anime

The Uglymug, Epicfighter series has an interesting journey through various media:

  • Web Novel: The series originated as a web novel written by Ryō Hiromatsu on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website from February 19, 2015, to October 15, 2022.
  • Manga: A manga adaptation illustrated by Osamu Kozuki was serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine from November 25, 2017, to December 25, 2020. The manga chapters were collected into six tankōbon volumes. A sequel manga, Busamen Gachi Fighter SSS, also by Kozuki, began serialization in the same magazine on December 25, 2024.
  • Light Novel: A light novel version with illustrations by Akira Banpai was published under Kobunsha’s Kobunsha Light Books imprint in May 2018.
  • English Release: Square Enix’s Manga UP! Global app publishes the manga in English under the title Uglymug, Epicfighter.

Where to Watch

Uglymug, Epicfighter will premiere on Tokyo MX on July 6, 2025. International viewers will likely be able to find the series on streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll shortly after its Japanese broadcast.

Additional Information

  • The anime adaptation was announced on November 18, 2024.
  • A 30-second TV commercial has been released to promote the series.

With its unique premise, talented staff, and now revealed theme songs, Uglymug, Epicfighter is shaping up to be a noteworthy addition to the isekai anime landscape in July 2025.
