Tokyo’s cinematic landscape saw a notable debut and enduring popularity over the latest weekend, with the live-action adaptation of “My Special One” (Kimi ga Tokubetsu) making a strong entry into the top ten, while the latest “Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE” concert film continued its impressive run. The weekend of June 20-22, 2025, underscored the diverse appeal of domestic productions in the Japanese box office.

“My Special One” Secures Sixth Place Debut

The highly anticipated live-action romantic comedy, “My Special One,” based on Momoko Koda’s popular manga series, opened its theatrical run at the number six spot in the Japanese box office. Released in 248 theaters nationwide on June 20, the film quickly garnered attention. Its initial reception was positive, notably securing the third position in Filmmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking, with an average rating of 4.04 out of 5.0 based on 417 reviews. This strong start for “My Special One” highlights the continued draw of manga adaptations in Japan’s vibrant film market, particularly within the romantic comedy genre, appealing to both established fans of the source material and new audiences.

“Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE” Holds Steady at Seventh Spot

Meanwhile, “Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: TABOO NIGHT XXXX,” the third concert film in the immensely popular “Uta no Prince-sama” anime franchise, demonstrated remarkable staying power by holding onto its seventh position for its seventh consecutive weekend in Japanese cinemas, as reported by Kogyo Tsushinsha. The film, featuring the four-member senior idol group QUARTET NIGHT, initially premiered in 135 theaters on May 9, and impressively debuted at number four.

Its sustained performance is a testament to the dedicated fanbase of the “Uta no Prince-sama” franchise. By June 17, the film’s cumulative gross had reached 967,428,780 yen (approximately US$6.64 million) with over 500,000 tickets sold. The film continued to draw audiences, surpassing the significant one-billion-yen milestone. As of June 25, “Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: TABOO NIGHT XXXX” had accumulated a total of 1,183,336,080 yen (US$8.17 million) from 710,204 admissions over 46 days since its release. This achievement means that all three concert films in the “Uta no Prince-sama” franchise have now successfully crossed the one-billion-yen mark, solidifying the series’ commercial success and its unique position in the Japanese entertainment industry.

Broader Japanese Box Office Trends

The latest weekend’s rankings also offered insights into other key players in the Japanese film circuit. “Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback,” the 28th feature film in the long-running “Detective Conan” franchise, continued its impressive run despite dropping two places to eighth position in its tenth weekend. The animated mystery has accumulated a cumulative total of 14.17 billion yen (US$97.14 million) over 66 days, making it the 18th all-time top-grossing film in Japan, surpassing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” from 2023. Another notable entry was “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-,” a re-edited episode version of the TV anime, which re-entered the top ten at ninth place.

The Japanese box office continues to showcase a robust appetite for domestic content, particularly animated features and live-action adaptations of popular manga and anime. While new releases like “My Special One” aim for fresh success, established franchises such as “Utano☆Princesama” and “Detective Conan” demonstrate remarkable longevity and consistent drawing power, contributing significantly to the overall health of the local film industry.
