RetroCrush, the dedicated streaming service for classic and cult anime titles, has significantly bolstered its content library with the acquisition of streaming rights for several notable series. This strategic move includes securing exclusive rights for the highly anticipated Rinkai! anime project, alongside adding the critically acclaimed Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and the future addition of Terror in Resonance. These acquisitions reinforce RetroCrush’s position as a premier destination for diverse anime programming in the United States and Canada.

Exclusive Rights to Rinkai! Highlight Growth Trajectory

Cineverse’s RetroCrush streaming service recently announced its acquisition of exclusive streaming rights to the Rinkai! project’s anime series. This new addition is slated to begin streaming on the platform in Fall. Rinkai! premiered in Japan on April 9, 2024, on Tokyo MX and BS Fuji, garnering attention for its unique premise.

The series delves into the world of women’s competitive track cycling, known as “keirin,” a sport that saw its organized competitions in Japan fold after a brief 15-year run post-World War II, only to be revived decades later by the Rinkai! League. The narrative follows Izumi Itō, a high school girl passionate about cycling, as she endeavors to become a professional racer alongside her friends, navigating the harsh realities of the sport. The anime is animated by TMS Entertainment’s 6th Studio in collaboration with Maruga Factory, with Takaaki Ishiyama directing and Hideki Shirane handling series scripts.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 Joins the Roster

RetroCrush has already made Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 available for streaming, marking a significant addition for fans of realistic disaster narratives. This 11-episode series, which originally aired in 2009, is celebrated for its emotionally harrowing depiction of a devastating natural disaster.

The story unfolds after a massive 8.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Tokyo, following two young children, Mirai and Yuuki, as they desperately attempt to return to their home in Setagaya. They encounter Mari, a motorcycle delivery woman, who takes them under her wing, and together they navigate the destruction and chaos. Produced by BONES and Kinema Citrus, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is lauded for its realistic portrayal of an urban environment affected by an earthquake and the subsequent disaster response. Its availability on RetroCrush offers a new generation of viewers the opportunity to experience this impactful, albeit heartbreaking, anime.

Terror in Resonance Set for Future Release

Adding to its expanding catalog, RetroCrush has also confirmed that Terror in Resonance will be added to its service in the future. This 11-episode psychological thriller, directed by the renowned Shinichirō Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) and produced by Studio MAPPA, originally aired from July to September 2014.

The series presents an alternate version of Tokyo decimated by a terrorist attack, with the only clue to the culprits being a cryptic video posted online. Two mysterious youths, Nine and Twelve, are at the center of the heinous plan, leaving the police baffled and the population gripped by paranoia. Terror in Resonance is recognized for its compelling narrative, unique animation style, and a captivating score by Yoko Kanno. Its inclusion on RetroCrush will make this fan-favorite series accessible to a wider audience, especially as it was previously available on other platforms but is no longer.

Strategic Expansion for Anime Enthusiasts

These acquisitions underscore RetroCrush’s ongoing commitment to providing a diverse and high-quality selection of anime. As a free, ad-supported video-on-demand service, available in the United States and Canada across various platforms including iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV, RetroCrush aims to serve both nostalgic fans and new viewers. Owned by Cineverse since its acquisition of Digital Media Rights in January 2022, RetroCrush continues to solidify its place in the competitive streaming landscape by consistently adding acclaimed and sought-after anime titles.
