A new stop-motion animated series featuring the beloved Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi is officially set to premiere worldwide on Netflix on July 24, 2025. Prior to its debut, an official clip from the series has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the whimsical world of Mariland and the adventures awaiting the duo.

A New Chapter for Sanrio’s Iconic Pair

The upcoming “My Melody & Kuromi” series marks a significant milestone, coinciding with My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary. This original net animation is produced by Toruku Studio, a part of WIT STUDIO, and is directed by Tomoki Misato, known for his work on the “Pui Pui Molcar” stop-motion television series. Shūko Nemoto is responsible for the scripts. The series will consist of 12 episodes, each approximately 13 minutes in length, promising a concise yet engaging narrative.

Plot Synopsis

The story is set in the charming Mariland, the home of My Melody and Kuromi. My Melody opens a bustling cake shop in Mariland, attracting many customers. Meanwhile, across the street, Kuromi’s Japanese sweets shop struggles to find business, fueling her determination to uncover the secret behind My Melody’s success.

The narrative takes an unexpected turn when My Melody encounters a mysterious pink heart in the forest, triggering a series of strange occurrences throughout Mariland. The two polar opposite characters, My Melody and her self-proclaimed rival Kuromi, find themselves working together as they prepare for a sweets-making contest judged by the world-famous pastry chef Pistachio. However, this competition soon escalates into a major incident that threatens the very fate of Mariland, forcing My Melody and Kuromi to confront an unforeseen crisis that impacts everyone.

Theme Song and Production Insights

The series features the theme song “Kawaii (Prod. Gen Hoshino),” performed by the popular five-member Korean girl group LE SSERAFIM. Japanese singer-songwriter Gen Hoshino is credited as the lyricist, composer, arranger, and producer for the song. LE SSERAFIM’s leader, KIM CHAEWON, expressed their excitement about contributing to the theme song, highlighting their affection for My Melody and Kuromi.

The production team, including director Tomoki Misato, has emphasized their commitment to pushing the boundaries of stop-motion animation for this project. Despite challenges, including remote collaboration during the pandemic, the creators instilled a deep love for the world of My Melody into the series, aiming to resonate with audiences of all ages. The series is designed to showcase thrilling action sequences alongside the adorable and dynamic characters.

Character Backgrounds

My Melody, created in 1975, celebrates her 50th anniversary this year. She is characterized as a straightforward and cheerful girl who enjoys baking cookies. Kuromi, introduced in 2005 as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival, marks her 20th anniversary. Despite her appearance as a troublemaker, Kuromi is described as having a feminine side and has quickly become a fan favorite. Their contrasting personalities are central to the series’ charm and narrative.

This stop-motion adaptation is the first of its kind for My Melody and Kuromi, bringing their beloved characters to life in a new and visually distinct format on Netflix.
