Uoyama’s Acclaimed Background: From Delinquents to Vision Impairment
Uoyama gained significant recognition for “Love’s in Sight!” (Japanese: Yankī-kun to Hakujō Gāru, also translated as “Delinquent and the White Cane Girl”), a romantic comedy and coming-of-age story that explored themes of love and understanding between a tough delinquent and a spunky girl with a vision impairment. The series was initially serialized online via Niconico Seiga and Pixiv from June 2018 to February 2022, also appearing on the Manga Hack website.
“Love’s in Sight!” saw its chapters compiled into eight tankōbon volumes by Media Factory. Its popularity extended beyond manga, with a live-action television drama adaptation airing in Japan from October to December 2021. Western audiences were introduced to the series through Viz Media, which began publishing the English translation in April 2023.
The critical acclaim for “Love’s in Sight!” includes a fourteenth-place ranking at the fifth Next Manga Awards in the web manga category in 2019, and a nomination for the prestigious 46th Kodansha Manga Awards in the general category in 2022. The series was also recognized by the New York Public Library, making its list of Best Books for Teens in 2023.
