Fans of Jun Mochizuki’s The Case Study of Vanitas manga can rejoice as a new chapter is officially slated for release on July 22. The announcement came from the July issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine, confirming the series’ highly anticipated return after an extended hiatus.
Anticipated Return in Monthly Gangan Joker
The upcoming chapter will be featured in the August 2025 issue of Monthly Gangan Joker, with the magazine even gracing its cover with an illustration from The Case Study of Vanitas. This marks a significant moment for the series, which last published a new chapter prior to entering an extended break in May 2024. Given that the manga went on hiatus after chapter 63, it is highly probable that the returning installment will be chapter 64.
A History of Hiatuses
The return of The Case Study of Vanitas follows a prolonged period of inactivity, with the manga having been on hiatus for nearly a year, or even 14 months depending on the tracking of its extended breaks. The series initially went on a two-month break in May 2024, which was subsequently extended. Prior to this, The Case Study of Vanitas has a history of intermittent pauses in its serialization. It previously went on hiatus in June 2022, resuming in May 2023. Another break occurred in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the manga resuming publication in November of the same year. Author Jun Mochizuki has sometimes taken breaks for health reasons or to work on other projects.
The World of The Case Study of Vanitas
Penned and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki, known for Pandora Hearts, The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) began its serialization in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker in December 2015. The story, set in a fictionalized 19th-century Paris, blends dark fantasy, steampunk, and supernatural elements. It follows the human Vanitas, who claims to be a vampire doctor, and the vampire Noé Archiviste, as they work together to heal “malnomen” afflicted vampires using the mysterious grimoire known as The Book of Vanitas.
As of April 2024, Square Enix has released 11 tankobon volumes of the manga. For English-speaking audiences, Yen Press has been simultaneously publishing the manga since its debut.
Anime Adaptation and Popularity
The manga’s popularity surged following its anime television series adaptation by Studio Bones. The anime, directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, aired in two parts: the first premiered in July 2021, and the second followed in January 2022, concluding in April 2022. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired, with Crunchyroll also offering the first part. Fans of the anime can stream The Case Study of Vanitas on Crunchyroll.
