Mamoru Hosoda’s acclaimed anime film, “The Boy and the Beast,” is set for a special one-day return to select U.S. theaters on August 18. The screening, presented by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, will feature the film in its original Japanese language with English subtitles.

A Second Chance to See a Modern Anime Classic

This limited theatrical run offers fans another opportunity to experience the visually stunning and emotionally resonant film on the big screen. “The Boy and the Beast” originally debuted in Japan in July 2015, where it was a box office success, becoming the second-highest-grossing domestic film in Japan that year. Funimation first brought the movie to U.S. theaters in March 2016, offering both subtitled and English-dubbed versions.

The Story of Kyuta and Kumatetsu

“The Boy and the Beast” (Japanese: Bakemono no Ko) is an adventure fantasy film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, known for other critically acclaimed works like “Summer Wars” and “Wolf Children.” The film tells the story of Kyuta, a lonely nine-year-old orphan living on the streets of Shibuya. He stumbles into a fantastical world populated by beasts and is taken in by Kumatetsu, a gruff, unconventional warrior beast who is seeking an apprentice.

Despite their initial clashes and constant bickering, Kyuta (whom Kumatetsu renames) and Kumatetsu gradually forge a strong, surrogate father-son bond through their training together. The narrative explores themes of family, mentorship, and overcoming inner darkness. As Kyuta grows, he navigates his dual identity between the human and beast worlds, eventually facing a deep darkness that threatens both realms.

Mamoru Hosoda’s Acclaimed Works and GKIDS Acquisition

Mamoru Hosoda is a prominent figure in contemporary Japanese animation. His films have consistently received critical acclaim, with “The Boy and the Beast” winning Animation of the Year at the 37th Japan Academy Prizes. Hosoda is also the only Japanese animation director outside of Studio Ghibli to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

GKIDS, a renowned distributor of animated features, has acquired the North American distribution rights to Hosoda’s full Studio Chizu catalog, including “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” “Summer Wars,” “Wolf Children,” and “The Boy and the Beast.” This acquisition aims to expand the reach of Hosoda’s works through new theatrical and home video releases, building on GKIDS’ history of bringing significant anime films to North American cinemas.

Fans interested in attending the one-day screening on August 18 are encouraged to check local listings and purchase tickets in advance, as it is a limited engagement.
