The episode became available for international fans with English subtitles on the same day due to time zone differences.

Where to Watch Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Season 2 Episode 16

For viewers in Japan, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Season 2 Episode 16 aired on 28 TBS-affiliated stations. It is also accessible for streaming on various Japanese platforms including d Anime Store, ABEMA, Bandai Channel, Disney+, DMM TV, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, and U-NEXT, with availability starting after 5:30 am JST on the release day.

International fans can stream the Summer 2025 series on global platforms such as Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Crunchyroll has been streaming the new season as it aired in Japan and also offers an English dub.

Episode 16 Plot Summary and Developments

Episode 16, “Sumire,” picks up following the events of Episode 15, where Nene, Hanako, and Akane were searching for Aoi in the Sixth Wonder’s Boundary. Meanwhile, Kou was grappling with how to save both Nene and Mitsuba.

In “Sumire,” Nene and Hanako find themselves separated from Akane and Aoi, ending up in a village where they are mistaken for mononoke. A young woman named Sumire (voiced by Yuzuki Ryouka), who appears to hold a position of importance in the village, takes them into her custody, binding them and bringing them to her home. Sumire, who reminds Nene of Aoi, makes it clear that Nene and Hanako are not free to leave, and even Hanako is unable to overcome her restrictions.

Sumire reveals that she is to be wed the following day, and Nene soon deduces that the marriage is to Number Six, whom Sumire has known since childhood. It is further revealed that Sumire is a living yorishiro, seemingly the key to unraveling this mysterious world. The “wedding” is, in fact, a human sacrifice, and Sumire attempts to trick Nene into taking her place. However, when the barrier meant for the sacrifice rejects Nene, the villagers realize she is not the true oracle. Hanako-kun, in a decisive moment, appears to save Nene, demonstrating his role as her protector.

The episode also hints at a connection between Sumire’s family and the shinigami, potentially explaining Aoi’s earlier desire to journey far away. The setting of Nene and Hanako’s encounter with Sumire is suggested to be in the past, possibly within someone’s memories. Meanwhile, Akane and Aoi are believed to still be in the present, with Akane in a precarious situation.

The Journey of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Season 2

The Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun anime is based on the popular manga series by the mangaka duo AidaIro, which has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine since June 2014. The first season of the anime aired from January to March 2020.

A new anime project was announced in December 2022, described as a “restart” of the series. The first installment of this project was an adaptation of After-School Hanako-kun, a spin-off, which aired for four episodes from October to November 2023, with a four-episode sequel airing in October 2024.

The second season of the main Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun anime premiered on January 12, 2025, airing on JNN affiliates, including TBS. The current “part 2” of Season 2 began airing on July 6, 2025, as part of the Summer 2025 anime season. While the total episode count for the second part has not been officially confirmed, it is expected to have 12 episodes and run within a single cour. The series continues to be produced by Studio Lerche, with Yōhei Fukui directing the main second season.
