Fans of the popular “Rascal Does Not Dream” series can rejoice as Crunchyroll has officially begun streaming Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. These two highly anticipated films, which conclude the High School Arc of the beloved franchise, became available on the streaming platform starting this Saturday.

The Long-Awaited Streaming Debut

The streaming release of Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid on Crunchyroll addresses a significant desire from the fanbase. For a period, these crucial films, which bridge the gap between the original Bunny Girl Senpai anime and the recently airing Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, were not readily accessible on streaming services. Their arrival allows viewers to complete the high school narrative arc of Sakuta Azusagawa and Mai Sakurajima’s story and gain full context for the ongoing “University Student Arc.”

Significance to the Franchise Timeline

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid adapt the eighth and ninth volumes, respectively, of Hajime Kamoshida’s original light novel series. These films are essential viewing for understanding the complete chronological progression of the “Rascal Does Not Dream” narrative. The first TV anime, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, covered up to the fifth novel volume, followed by the film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl which adapted volumes six and seven. The recent release of the television anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, which kicked off the “University Student Arc,” made the absence of these two intervening films on streaming particularly noticeable for many viewers.

Film Performance and Production

Both films saw successful theatrical runs in Japan prior to their Crunchyroll debut. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out premiered in June 2023, selling over 118,000 tickets and earning approximately 175 million yen (about US$1.28 million) in its opening weekend, ranking #4. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid followed in December 2023, also opening at #4, with sales of 119,000 tickets and earning roughly 164 million yen (about US$1.11 million) in its first three days.

Returning Production Staff

The films maintained consistency in their production staff, with Sōichi Masui returning to direct both features at CloverWorks. Masahiro Yokotani was again responsible for supervising and writing the scripts, while Satomi Tamura handled character design and served as chief animation director. This continuity in the creative team ensures a seamless visual and narrative experience for fans familiar with the established aesthetic of the “Rascal Does Not Dream” anime series.

Accessibility and Future of the Series

The availability of both films on Crunchyroll includes both English subtitles and dub options, providing accessibility for a broader audience. This move by Crunchyroll and Aniplex of America is crucial for allowing fans to catch up on the story, especially with the “University Student Arc” now underway.

The “Rascal Does Not Dream” franchise continues to expand, with the light novel series by Hajime Kamoshida having more than 3 million copies in circulation. Yen Press is also releasing the light novel series in English for readers who wish to delve deeper into the source material. With the conclusion of the high school arc now readily available for streaming, the stage is set for fans to fully immerse themselves in the unfolding college adventures of Sakuta and Mai.
