Genesis of the Buzz Recipe Manga
“Isekai Ryūji: Shikō to Kyomu no Buzz Recipe Tabi” first launched on the Manga ONE service in August 2024. The series was penned by Rintarō Hamaguchi, with the real-life chef and YouTuber Ryūji providing supervision for the story. The vibrant artwork that brought Ryūji’s otherworldly culinary adventures to life was handled by Hishiwo Miyazawa. Shogakukan released the first compiled book volume of the manga on February 12.
Plotting the Path of a Transformed Chef
The story centers on Ryūji, a well-known cooking researcher with a massive online following and a reputation for creating “buzz recipes”—dishes that are often simple, unconventional, and go viral. The plot takes a fantastical turn when the protagonist, while drunk and asleep, finds himself inexplicably transported to another world.
Upon his arrival, Ryūji’s blunt and unfiltered personality, which is a hallmark of his online persona, immediately lands him in trouble. He is quickly imprisoned for his disrespectful remarks towards the local lord, in a world where essential seasonings like salt and sugar are controlled by the nobility and fine cuisine is a restricted luxury. Despite his predicament, Ryūji declares his intention to cook for a character named Tina, leveraging his unique “buzz recipes” to create “the best” meals in the “shortest time.” The manga then follows his journey as he utilizes his modern culinary knowledge and ingredients to rise to success in this new, restrictive world.
