Two beloved animated films from the Mobile Police Patlabor franchise, Mamoru Oshii’s Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie and Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie, are set to receive Ultra HD Blu-ray (UHD-BD) 4K remastered releases in early 2026. The announcement, made on August 10, also confirmed limited-time revival theatrical screenings in Japan this October.

UHD-BD 4K Remastered Releases Slated for 2026

Fans of the visionary mecha anime will soon be able to experience the films in stunning 4K detail. Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie is scheduled for its UHD-BD debut on January 28, 2026, followed by Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie on March 25, 2026. These releases mark the first time the series has undergone a complete 4K film scan remastering.

Enhanced Audio and Special Features

Both UHD-BD releases are poised to offer a premium viewing experience beyond the enhanced visuals. They will come packed with special features, including a dedicated booklet and an extensive storyboard collection. Audio options will cater to purists and those seeking a modern sound, providing multi-audio versions that include both the original theatrical release’s Dolby Surround and the 1998 sound renewal version in Dolby Digital 5.1 channel. For those who purchase from the A-on STORE, each volume will include a postcard featuring art by mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi, with a connected purchase bonus of two B5-sized replica mini-posters.

October Revival Screenings Across Japan

Ahead of their physical media release, both films will return to Japanese cinemas for a special revival screening event organized by Filmarks. Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie, originally released in 1989, will begin its limited two-week run on October 3. Its 1993 sequel, Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie, will follow, also for a two-week limited engagement, starting October 17. These screenings will feature the theatrical release audio alongside the new 4K visuals, offering attendees a unique opportunity to see the remastered versions on the big screen. Entrance bonuses for attendees are also planned.

A Look Back at the Acclaimed Patlabor Films

Directed by the renowned Mamoru Oshii, both Patlabor films are celebrated for their intricate storytelling, thoughtful exploration of technology’s impact on society, and a grounded approach to the mecha genre.

Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie (1989)

The first film delves into a computer virus that causes construction labors (humanoid machines used for heavy labor) to run rampant across Tokyo in the summer of 1999. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Vehicle Division 2nd Platoon is tasked with hunting down the invisible culprit behind the widespread chaos.

Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie (1993)

The sequel sees the Second Platoon confront a terrifying terrorist who attempts to recreate a “war” within the heart of Tokyo. The film is lauded for its complex narrative and prescient themes concerning geopolitics and the nature of conflict.

The announcements underscore the enduring legacy of the Patlabor franchise and its continued relevance to anime enthusiasts worldwide.
