The first two Puella Magi Madoka Magica compilation films, Beginnings and Eternal, are set to premiere as a re-edited television series beginning October 12. This TV edition, titled “Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Beginning/The Eternal Story TV Edition,” will air on MBS and TBS in Japan as part of their Sunday 5 PM anime slot.
Re-Imagining a Modern Classic for Television
The upcoming TV broadcast will comprise 11 episodes, offering fans a new way to experience the beloved magical girl dark fantasy. The original Puella Magi Madoka Magica television anime series first aired in January 2011, quickly garnering critical acclaim for its unique take on the genre.
The theatrical versions, Part 1: Beginnings and Part 2: Eternal, originally premiered in October 2012. These films served as a condensed recap of the original 12-episode TV series but featured redone voice acting and some newly animated footage, enhancing the visual and auditory experience for viewers. The decision to re-edit these compilation films for a television run marks a full circle for the franchise, which began as a TV series, transitioned to films, and is now returning to the small screen in this re-cut format.
Franchise’s Enduring Legacy and Future
A commercial featuring iconic characters such as Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, and Kyubey has been released on YouTube to promote the upcoming TV edition. The Madoka Magica franchise has maintained a strong presence since its debut, with various animated projects extending its universe.
Following the success of the first two compilation films, the franchise released Part 3: Rebellion in 2013, an original story that continued the narrative. This film achieved significant box office success, surpassing 2 billion yen in revenue, a notable feat for a late-night anime film.
Beyond the main series and films, the franchise expanded with Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story, a TV anime based on a smartphone game. Its first season aired from January to March 2020, followed by a second season from August to September 2021, and a “Final Season” in April 2022.
Fans also anticipate the release of a new animated film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis no Kaiten, which is slated for February 2026. This continuous development underscores the enduring popularity and cultural impact of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe.
