Anime streaming giant Crunchyroll has officially announced the acquisition of the highly anticipated anime film, Eiga Senpai wa Otokonoko: Ame Nochi Hare (Senpai is an Otokonoko: Sunshine After the Rain). The movie, which serves as a continuation of the popular Senpai is an Otokonoko television series, premiered in Japanese theaters on February 14, 2025, and will now be available to a global audience via Crunchyroll’s platform.
This move by Crunchyroll solidifies its commitment to bringing fan-favorite anime content to its subscribers worldwide, following its previous streaming of the television series.
Continuing the Beloved Crossdressing Romance Story
The Senpai is an Otokonoko franchise, based on Pom’s widely acclaimed manga, delves into a unique and heartwarming high school romance. The story centers on Makoto Hanaoka, a male student who enjoys crossdressing, and the complications that arise from his secret.
The narrative truly kicks off when Saki Aoi, a first-year student, confesses her feelings to Makoto, initially believing him to be a girl. Even after Makoto reveals his true gender, Saki, who is bisexual, remains undeterred and determined to make him fall in love with her. This dynamic is further complicated by Ryuji Taiga, Makoto’s childhood friend, who also harbors romantic feelings for Makoto, creating a compelling love triangle. The television series explored these initial relationships and personal journeys, including Makoto’s strained relationship with his mother regarding his crossdressing.
What to Expect from “Ame Nochi Hare”
The film, Eiga Senpai wa Otokonoko: Ame Nochi Hare, promises to continue the emotional and romantic developments of the characters. The title “Sunshine After the Rain” suggests a resolution or a period of clarity and happiness after overcoming challenges. While specific plot details for the film’s Crunchyroll release are under wraps, it is expected to pick up where the 12-episode television series left off, further exploring the intricacies of Makoto, Saki, and Ryuji’s relationships and personal growth.
The film’s staff from the anime series, including director Shinsuke Yanagi, returned for the movie, ensuring continuity in its artistic vision and storytelling. Kujira (whaledontsleep), who performed the opening and ending themes for the TV series, also returned to perform the film’s theme song, “Otona ni Narenai” (I Can’t Grow Up).
The Journey from Webtoon to Anime Sensation
The Senpai is an Otokonoko manga, written and illustrated by Pom, originally gained popularity as a digital series on Line Manga from 2019 to 2021. Its success led to its collection in print volumes and an official English translation by Webtoon. The series quickly garnered a dedicated fanbase, ranking highly in “Manga We Want to See Animated” polls.
The anime television series, produced by Project No.9 and directed by Shinsuke Yanagi, aired from July to September 2024 on Fuji TV’s Noitamina programming block. Crunchyroll streamed the series outside of Asia, making it accessible to a global audience and contributing to its widespread recognition. The announcement of the film shortly after the series finale was met with enthusiasm from fans eager for more of the story.
With Eiga Senpai wa Otokonoko: Ame Nochi Hare now joining Crunchyroll’s extensive library, fans can anticipate the next chapter in this touching story of self-discovery, acceptance, and unconventional romance.
