Aniplex officially announced an original television anime project titled “Inherit the Winds” (Kaze wo Tsugumono) during the Aniplex Online Fest on Saturday. The new series is an adaptation of the popular Japanese stage play quadrilogy, the “Tachikawa Jinsuke” series, specifically drawing from its first story.

Delving into the Bakumatsu Era with the Shinsengumi

The newly revealed anime is set in Japan’s turbulent Bakumatsu era, specifically in the city of Kyoto. The narrative centers on a soldier who has lost his memories and is subsequently aided by the renowned Shinsengumi member Sōji Okita. This amnesiac protagonist is given the name “Junsuke Tachikawa,” marking the beginning of his new life among the Mibu soldiers. The series aims to portray the “fleeting youth” of these individuals amidst a rapidly changing Japan with sharp detail and a fresh perspective.

The “Tachikawa Jinsuke” stage play series, from which “Inherit the Winds” is adapted, has been performed by the theatre group Caramel Box since 1996. The original stories follow the fictional Shinsengumi soldier Jinsuke Tachikawa as he navigates the tumultuous period leading up to the Meiji Restoration. “Inherit the Winds” specifically introduces Tachikawa as he enters the war and grapples with the aftermath of the Kinmon incident.

Key Creative Staff and Production Details

Tomohiro Kawamura is directing the anime, with production handled by Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc.. The original story is credited to Yutaka Narui and Aniplex, with cooperation from Azuki Mashiba. Yutaka Narui is also responsible for writing the scripts for the anime adaptation, bringing a consistent vision from the stage play to the screen.

Fumi Ebina is designing the characters, while Shigeru Kishida is composing the music. A teaser trailer and a motion teaser visual were also released alongside the announcement, offering a first glimpse into the anime’s aesthetic and atmosphere.

As of the announcement, a specific release date for “Inherit the Winds” has not been revealed, with the broadcast time listed as “TBA”. Fans can anticipate more details regarding the cast and premiere as the production progresses.
