Witch Watch Episode 23 delves into the ambitious creative endeavors of Yuri Makuwa and Kukumi Ureshino, who team up to produce a doujin manga based on their favorite series, “Uron Mirage.” This installment, released on September 7, 2025, showcases the humorous and often chaotic process of fan-made content creation, with the main protagonists, Nico and Morihito, eventually joining the fray with their unique magical assistance.

The Premise of “Witch Watch”

For those new to the series, Witch Watch is a magical romantic comedy manga by Kenta Shinohara, serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. The story revolves around Nico Wakatsuki, a young witch-in-training, and her childhood friend Morihito Otogi, who possesses the strength of an ogre. They begin living together as Morihito is tasked with protecting Nico from a dire prophecy. The series is known for its blend of unpredictable magic, slice-of-life humor, and the evolving relationship between the two protagonists amidst their high school lives and magical misadventures.

Unpacking Episode 23: A Doujinshi’s Journey

Episode 23 shifts its primary focus to supporting characters Yuri Makuwa and Kukumi Ureshino, offering a look into their passion project.

The Creative Struggle: Makuwa and Kukumi’s Collaboration

The episode begins with Yuri Makuwa, a teacher and avid fan, and Kukumi Ureshino, a talented but insecure young artist, embarking on their first collaborative doujin manga. Their project, centered on “Uron Mirage,” is a labor of love, but it quickly encounters challenges. Yuri struggles with finalizing the storyboard, driven by her “canon purist” sensibilities, while Kukumi grapples with the demanding realities of manga creation and optimistic deadlines.

Online Friendships and Real-Life Worries

A subplot unfolds when Kukumi reveals she has made an online friend, “Limelight,” with whom she plans an in-person meetup. This news sparks worry in Makuwa, who, acting as a teacher and perhaps a bit of a concerned friend, decides to secretly follow Kukumi to the gathering. The anticipated twist where Limelight turns out to be an older man is humorously subverted when it’s revealed she’s simply a bubbly high school girl who adopted an old-fashioned way of speaking from chatting with her father and his friends online. This misunderstanding ultimately provides Makuwa with a creative epiphany for their manga.

Deadline Disasters and Magical Interventions

As the deadline for the doujinshi approaches, Makuwa and Kukumi face several technical disasters, including missing files and crucial pages vanishing from their comic. A significant hurdle arises when page 23, a vital scene, goes missing, and they also accidentally order 1,000 copies instead of 100.

This is where Nico and Morihito step in to lend a hand at the fan event. Nico utilizes her magic in surprisingly mundane yet effective ways, such as shrinking the oversized boxes of manga copies and even comically reprinting missing speech bubbles with a marker and a magical stamp. In a magical mishap, Morihito’s hair is accidentally bleached white, making him resemble Oboro, a character from “Uron Mirage,” which generates additional buzz among event-goers.
