Kadokawa announced on Saturday that Nana Kawaishi has joined the cast of the original anime series, Goodbye, Lara (Sayonara Lara), taking on the role of Mari Otsu. The announcement was accompanied by a new visual for Mari.
The upcoming anime, slated for a 2026 premiere, is a modern reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” and is being animated by Kinema Citrus.

Nana Kawaishi is the latest addition to the voice cast of Goodbye, Lara, portraying the character Mari Otsu. Along with the casting news, Kadokawa also released a dedicated visual for Mari. This revelation adds another key character to the anticipated original series.
Previously Announced Lead: Hana Hishikawa as Lara
The titular character, Lara, will be voiced by Hana Hishikawa. Hishikawa’s casting was previously confirmed, with a teaser video revealing her voice as Lara, a mermaid who yearns for love. Kadokawa also showcased a “human” visual for Lara, hinting at her journey in the human world.
The Story of ‘Goodbye, Lara’
Goodbye, Lara presents a unique take on “The Little Mermaid” fairy tale. The narrative centers on a mermaid who, after making a forbidden wish for human love and subsequently perishing, is reborn 200 years later. Her new life begins in modern-day Japan, specifically in Lake Biwa, where she must navigate and adapt to human society. The setting of Lake Biwa is particularly meaningful, as it is the hometown of the anime’s director, Takushi Koide.
