Tokyo, Japan and Los Angeles, California – AnimeJapan, the world’s largest anime event, and Crunchyroll, the global leader in anime streaming, have announced the establishment of the “New Creator Awards” to identify and support the next generation of anime creative talent. The awards, sponsored by Crunchyroll, are now accepting applications from Japanese students, aiming to provide a significant platform for up-and-coming animators.
Nurturing the Future of Anime
The initiative underscores a shared commitment by both organizations to cultivate new voices and artistic visions within the anime industry. AnimeJapan, an annual tradeshow held in Tokyo, has a mission to promote and develop Japanese animation culture and industry. Crunchyroll, known for its extensive anime library and global reach, has consistently emphasized its goal to build a sustainable anime ecosystem and collaborate with creators.
Asa Suehira, Chief Content Officer at Crunchyroll, expressed enthusiasm for the awards, stating that they are “honored and excited to celebrate up and coming anime talent by streaming their winning films on Crunchyroll” and that these new creatives will “delight fans worldwide with their fresh, new perspectives.”
Award Structure and Global Exposure
The New Creator Awards will recognize excellence in short films, with winning works (15 minutes or less) receiving both domestic distribution in Japan and worldwide streaming through Crunchyroll across more than 200 countries and territories. This global reach offers an unparalleled opportunity for emerging creators to showcase their work to a massive international audience, a crucial step for aspiring artists.
Students are eligible for one of seven distinct awards, which include significant monetary prizes and unique industry opportunities:
- Grand Prix Winner: Awarded 1 million yen.
- Crunchyroll Award Winner: Receives a scholarship of 1 million yen.

Application and Judging Process
Applications for the New Creator Awards are currently open and will close on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The judging panel will consist of the AnimeJapan Executive Committee, which comprises 22 anime companies and one organization, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation by industry veterans.
The winners will be officially announced during an awards ceremony at AnimeJapan on Saturday, March 28, 2026. This timing places the awards ceremony within AnimeJapan 2026, which is scheduled to run from March 28-31, 2026, with public days on March 28-29 and business days on March 30-31.
Broader Impact on the Anime Industry
This collaboration signifies a strategic effort to address the ongoing need for fresh talent within the robust and rapidly expanding anime industry. Crunchyroll has previously stated its commitment to expanding the anime universe and working with creators to tell diverse stories globally. The platform’s “minimum guarantee plus revenue share” model aims to provide creators with financial stability and unlimited upside if their shows become hits, fostering a more sustainable ecosystem for anime production.
The New Creator Awards complements existing initiatives like the annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which recognize established works and artists in the industry and were recently held in Tokyo, celebrating top talent across numerous categories. By focusing on emerging talent, this new partnership aims to secure a vibrant future for anime by directly investing in its creative foundation.
