A new clip from the highly anticipated fourth Sumikko Gurashi anime film, titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko (The Sky Kingdom and the Two Children), was officially posted today, October 10, 2025. The film is set to open in Japanese theaters on October 31, 2025.
The recently unveiled clip offers a glimpse into one of the missions the Sumikko characters undertake in the Sky Kingdom, showcasing them playing music on “sacred flowers” under the direction of a penguin-like creature. This musical interlude precedes a trailer featuring Kaela Kimura’s theme song “Kimi no Kasa” (Your Umbrella).

The newly released clip, shared via the official Sumikko Gurashi anime film’s X/Twitter account, highlights the charm and whimsical nature that fans have come to expect from the franchise. It focuses on the Sumikko characters’ delightful interaction with the “sacred flowers,” producing a melody that hints at the magical adventure awaiting audiences. The scene also features a mysterious penguin-looking conductor, adding to the intrigue of the Sky Kingdom.
Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Sora no Ōkoku to Futari no Ko Story Details
The fourth installment promises a heartwarming adventure. The story begins with continuous rain in Sumikko’s town, causing the fried duo, Tonkatsu and Ebifurai no Shippo, to feel damp. One day, an “Ouji” (prince) from the Sky Kingdom falls from above, seeking help due to a severe water shortage in his airborne realm. The Sumikkos embark on an adventure into the sky to help save the kingdom from its crisis.
Production Team and Returning Cast
The film is produced by Fanworks, the studio behind all previous Sumikko Gurashi TV anime series and films. Naomi Iwata (known for Pingu in the City) is directing the fourth film, with Takashi Sumita returning as the scriptwriter, having previously worked on the first and third films. Kaori Hino also returns as the art director. Yoshihiko Inohara and Manami Honjō will once again lend their voices as narrators. Asmik Ace, Inc. is handling the distribution of the film.
The Enduring Popularity of Sumikko Gurashi Films
The Sumikko Gurashi film series has garnered significant popularity since its debut. The first film, Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: The Pop-up Book and the Secret Child, released on November 8, 2019, earned 1.4 billion yen (about US$12.8 million) and sold 1.22 million tickets in Japan. It even won Best Animation of the Year at the Japanese Movie Critics Awards. The second film, Sumikko Gurashi: The Little Wizard in the Blue Moonlight, followed on November 5, 2021, and the third film, Sumikko Gurashi: The Mysterious Child of the Patchwork Factory, premiered on November 3, 2023. The cumulative attendance for the film series as a whole has exceeded three million viewers.
The Sumikko Gurashi characters, created by San-X in 2012, are beloved for their slightly negative yet endearing personalities, finding comfort in corners. The franchise continues to expand, with merchandise, books, mobile apps, and video games contributing to its annual sales of approximately 20 billion yen as of 2019.
