The upcoming supernatural action anime “Scum of the Brave” (Yūsha no Kuzu) has officially announced its first main cast member, with popular voice actor Ryōta Suzuki taking on the lead role of Shinigami Yashiro. The announcement was accompanied by a new teaser visual and character trailer, building anticipation for the series’ broadcast debut in January 2026.
Suzuki is widely recognized for his roles as Yu Ishigami in “Kaguya-sama: Love Is War” and Ryusei in “Dr. STONE”. In “Scum of the Brave,” he will lend his voice to Shinigami Yashiro, a freelance hero characterized by his apathetic demeanor and constant need for cash.
“Scum of the Brave” Anime: What We Know So Far
The “Scum of the Brave” TV anime is an adaptation of the light novel series written by Rocket Shoukai and illustrated by Yuya Kusaka, which was initially serialized as a web novel. A manga adaptation by Nakashima723 is also currently ongoing.
Plot and Setting
The story of “Scum of the Brave” unfolds in an alternate 21st-century Tokyo, where the criminal underworld is dominated by “Demon Kings”—mafia members who have undergone “ether-enhancement surgery” to gain formidable powers. To combat these powerful foes, “Braves” (bounty hunters) emerge, enhancing their own “ether abilities” with a drug called E3. The protagonist, Yashiro, known as the “Grim Reaper,” is a cynical freelance hero primarily motivated by money, seeking simple pleasures like pizza, beer, and card games. His life takes a turn when a young high school girl, Shirogamine, who aspires to be a hero, insists on becoming his apprentice.
Production Team
Studio OLM, known for its work on “The Apothecary Diaries” and “Pokémon,” is handling the animation production for “Scum of the Brave”. The series will be directed by Shinji Ushiro, who previously directed “DON’T TOY WITH ME, MISS NAGATORO 2nd Attack”. Yoichi Kato, known for the “Duel Masters” franchise, is in charge of series composition and script. Character designs are being handled by Rika Murakami, and the music is composed by Kenichiro Suehiro, recognized for his work on “Fire Force”. The anime is slated to broadcast on the Nippon Television network.
