The highly anticipated anime film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s sci-fi light novel, “All You Need Is Kill,” is slated to open in Japanese theaters on January 9, 2026. Warner Bros. Japan officially announced the release date, accompanying it with a new main trailer and key visual that provide the first listen of the main cast’s voices.

Unveiling the Trailer and Key Visual

The newly released main trailer offers a dynamic glimpse into the world of “All You Need Is Kill,” featuring the vocal performances of Ai Mikami as Rita and Natsuki Hanae as Keiji. This marks Ai Mikami’s debut in voice acting, taking on the role of the protagonist, Rita. Natsuki Hanae, known for prominent roles such as Tanjiro Kamado in “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba,” voices Keiji.

The trailer opens with Rita’s impactful line, “Death is, in a way, an ally,” which also serves as the film’s tagline, setting a somber yet action-packed tone. It showcases the intense battles against mysterious alien creatures known as Darols, highlighting Rita’s struggle within a relentless time loop. The theme song, “Tsuretette,” performed by the 19-year-old singer-songwriter AKASAKI, also makes its debut in the trailer.

Theatrical Release and Production Details

The anime film will premiere across ten theaters in Japan on January 9, 2026. Produced by Warner Bros. Japan and animated by the acclaimed Studio 4°C, known for works such as “Tekkonkinkreet” and “Children of the Sea,” the film is directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Akimoto previously served as an art director for “Poupelle of Chimney Town” and this marks his feature directorial debut. Yuichiro Kido is handling the screenplay, with music composed by Yasuhiro Maeda.

A New Perspective: Focusing on Rita

While Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s original light novel and the 2014 Hollywood live-action film adaptation, “Edge of Tomorrow” (starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt), primarily centered on Keiji Kiriya’s experience in the time loop, this anime adaptation takes a different approach. The anime shifts its narrative focus to Rita Vrataski, retelling the story from her unique perspective.

The plot centers on Rita, a young woman volunteering to rebuild Japan after the appearance of a massive alien plant called “Darol.” When Darol unleashes monstrous creatures, Rita is killed but then wakes up, caught in an endless time loop. Each death sends her back to the same morning with her memories intact, allowing her to hone her combat skills and knowledge. The story explores her growing solitude until she encounters Keiji, who shares the same looping fate, leading to a fateful encounter that could change their destinies.

From Light Novel to Multiple Adaptations

“All You Need Is Kill” originated as a Japanese science fiction light novel written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka with illustrations by Yoshitoshi Abe, published in December 2004. Its compelling narrative, involving a soldier caught in a time loop during an alien invasion, quickly garnered international attention.

The novel was first adapted into a manga series, illustrated by Takeshi Obata and written by Ryosuke Takeuchi, which was serialized in “Weekly Young Jump” from January to May 2014. In the same year, it received a major Hollywood live-action film adaptation titled “Edge of Tomorrow,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, which further propelled its global recognition. GKIDS has acquired the distribution rights for the “All You Need Is Kill” anime film in multiple territories, including North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The film has already premiered at various international film festivals, including the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
