A Journey of Heroism and Self-Discovery Nears Its End
Shy, which began its serialization in Weekly Shōnen Champion in August 2019, follows the journey of Teru Momijiyama, a timid young girl who serves as Japan’s superhero representative, codenamed “Shy”. Despite her severe shyness and insecurities, Teru strives to protect global peace alongside other international heroes. The manga delves into her personal growth as she confronts villains and her own shortcomings, proving that courage comes in many forms.
The series has gained a dedicated following for its unique take on the superhero genre, blending action with introspective character development. Bukimi Miki’s storytelling has been praised for its ability to build depth in its characters and maintain a compelling pace.
Manga’s Publication and International Reach
Since its debut, Shy has been collected into thirty-one tankōbon volumes, with the most recent volume, the 31st, having shipped on October 8, 2025. The manga was initially conceived as a one-shot story in January 2017 before its full serialization began.
For English-speaking audiences, Yen Press has licensed the series and has been releasing it in North America, with the 11th volume scheduled to ship on October 28, 2025. The manga has also been licensed in several European countries, including France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, starting in 2020.
Anime Adaptation’s Success
The popularity of Shy further expanded with its anime television series adaptation, produced by Eight Bit. The first season aired from October to December 2023, and a second season followed, airing from July to September 2024. Crunchyroll streamed both seasons, including an English dub, making the adventures of Japan’s shy hero accessible to a global audience. The anime has been noted for its faithful adaptation of the manga’s arcs, bringing the vibrant world and characters to life.
As the manga enters its final chapters, fans await the conclusion of Teru Momijiyama’s journey, reflecting on the impact of a hero who proved that even the most timid heart can shine brightly.
