The highly anticipated anime film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s acclaimed sci-fi light novel, All You Need Is Kill, is set to open in North American theaters on January 16, 2026. This announcement from distributor GKIDS follows the recent reveal of the film’s main trailer and its January 9, 2026, premiere in Japan.

The film, animated by Studio 4°C and directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, offers a fresh take on the time-looping narrative previously popularized by a manga adaptation and the 2014 Hollywood live-action film, Edge of Tomorrow.

A New Perspective on a Familiar Loop

All You Need Is Kill plunges viewers into a relentless war against extraterrestrial invaders known as Mimics. The story centers on a soldier, Keiji Kiriya, who finds himself trapped in a deadly time loop, reliving the same battle and death repeatedly. Each iteration allows him to hone his combat skills, bringing him closer to understanding his predicament and finding a way to break the cycle. A key element of this anime adaptation is its retelling of the narrative from the perspective of Rita Vrataski, a legendary warrior often referred to as the “Full Metal Bitch,” who Keiji encounters within the loop.

This shift in perspective promises a unique exploration of the source material, differentiating it from previous adaptations which largely focused on Keiji’s journey. The original novel was published in Japan in 2004 and later in English by Viz Media.

Creative Team and Voice Cast Bring the Story to Life

Under the direction of Kenichiro Akimoto, known for his work as a unit director on Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko, Studio 4°C (renowned for titles like Tekkonkinkreet and Mind Game) is responsible for the animation. Yuichiro Kido penned the script for the film.

The Japanese voice cast features prominent talents, with Natsuki Hanae (known for Demon Slayer and DAN DA DAN) voicing the protagonist Keiji Kiriya, and Ai Mikami taking on her first voice acting role as Rita Vrataski. Kana Hanazawa and Hiccorohee also join the cast as Shasta and Raychell, respectively. The film’s theme song, “Tsuretette,” is performed by AKASAKI.

Journey to North American Screens

The All You Need Is Kill anime film has already made a significant impact on the international film festival circuit. It held its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 9, 2025. Following this, it had its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at New York Comic-Con in October. The film has also been screened at other prestigious events, including the Bucheon International Animation Festival, San Sebastian Fantasy Festival, Scotland Loves Anime Festival, Leeds International Film Festival, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

GKIDS, a prominent distributor of animated films, has acquired the rights for All You Need Is Kill across multiple territories, including North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. This widespread distribution ensures that fans in these regions will have the opportunity to experience the new anime adaptation in theaters. While the film is set for a limited theatrical run in Japan starting January 9, 2026, the North American debut will follow shortly after on January 16, 2026.
