The highly anticipated anime series, “My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s” (Ansatsusha de Aru Ore no Sutētasu ga Yūsha Yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi Nodaga), has successfully launched its first season, with new episodes now airing weekly. The series, which premiered in October 2025, is available for streaming globally on Crunchyroll, drawing viewers into its unique take on the popular isekai genre.

Premiere and Global Streaming Availability

“My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s” made its debut in October 2025, with episodes rolling out weekly. Fans across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, the Indian Subcontinent, and Southeast Asia can catch the series on Crunchyroll. New episodes are released every Monday at 10:00 a.m. PDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT, featuring both English subtitles and same-day English dubs for an accessible viewing experience. In Japan, the anime broadcasts on TV Tokyo, BS Fuji, and Animax. The season is slated for a total of 12 episodes.

The Premise: An Assassin’s Unlikely Rise

The series introduces Akira Oda, a seemingly unremarkable high school student whose entire class is suddenly summoned to a fantastical new world. While his classmates are bestowed with powerful “Hero” abilities, Akira finds himself with the ostensibly weaker “Assassin” class. However, this initial assessment proves to be misleading, as Akira’s hidden capabilities quickly demonstrate that his “mediocre” assassin status actually exceeds that of even the strongest heroes.

This newfound strength and his innate ability to go unnoticed lead Akira to become suspicious of the world’s king and princess, who initiated the summoning. As he delves deeper, Akira uncovers a dark conspiracy within the royal court. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, he is forced to flee, utilizing his unparalleled assassin skills to navigate a treacherous world, uncover the truth, and ultimately seek revenge against those who wronged him.

Subverting Isekai Tropes

“My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s” offers a refreshing twist on the common “isekai” (another world) genre. Rather than focusing on a traditional hero, the narrative centers on an anti-hero protagonist. This subversion allows for a more intricate exploration of power dynamics, morality, and espionage within a fantasy setting, setting it apart from more conventional summoned-hero stories. Akira’s journey highlights that true power isn’t always about brute force or a glorious title, but often about cunning, adaptability, and the ability to operate from the shadows.

Production and Creative Team

The anime adaptation is a collaborative effort, produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by Sunrise, known for their work on various popular titles. Nobuyoshi Habara directs the series, with Kunihiko Okada handling the series composition and scripts. Character designs are managed by Hirona Okada and Kaori Saito, while Masahiro Yamane is responsible for monster designs. The musical score is composed by Satoshi Igarashi.

Origins in Light Novel and Manga

The anime is based on a popular light novel series written by Matsuri Akai and illustrated by Tōzai. The light novel originally began serialization on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in January 2017. Overlap later acquired the series, publishing it under their Overlap Bunko imprint. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Hiroyuki Aigamo, followed, beginning serialization on Overlap’s Comic Gardo website in July 2018. Both the light novel and manga have been licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, allowing a broader audience to enjoy Akira’s story across different mediums.
