Tokyo, Japan – Konami and ADK Emotions have announced that the beloved and long-running anime series, Sazae-san, will be getting its first-ever arcade game, titled Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi (Sazae-san Spot the Difference). The game is slated for a spring 2026 launch, bringing the iconic family to arcades across Japan.

This marks a significant milestone for the Sazae-san franchise, which, despite its immense popularity and historical significance as the longest-running animated television series, has traditionally seen limited merchandise and home video releases.

A New Interactive Experience with the Isono Family

The upcoming arcade game, Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi, will be a “spot the difference” style game. Players will engage with the familiar world of Sazae-san through a touch-panel interface, searching for discrepancies in scenes directly sourced from the anime’s broadcast history.

Gameplay Modes and Accessibility

The game is designed to appeal to a wide audience, offering multiple play modes:

  • Single-player mode: For individual enjoyment.
  • Versus mode: Allows two players to compete head-to-head to find differences faster.
  • Challenge mode: Offers extended gameplay by clearing stages.

Difficulty levels will be adjustable, with options for “easy,” “normal,” and “difficult,” ensuring that both casual players and dedicated fans can enjoy the experience.

Public Previews and Release Information

Prior to its official launch, Konami Arcade Games is holding a location test for Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi at Round One Stadium Ario Kashiwa until October 26, 2025. Additionally, the game will be showcased at the “AMUSEMENT EXPO 2025” on November 14 and 15, 2025, where attendees who try the game will receive an original sticker.

The game’s release in spring 2026 will undoubtedly be a notable event for fans of the enduring anime series.

The Enduring Legacy of Sazae-san

Sazae-san is more than just an anime; it’s a cultural institution in Japan. The series, which began airing in October 1969, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series. As of October 2024, it celebrated its 55th broadcast anniversary.

From Manga to Cultural Phenomenon

The franchise originated as a yonkoma (four-panel) manga series created by Machiko Hasegawa, first published in 1946. The manga depicted the everyday life of Sazae Fuguta and her multi-generational family, reflecting contemporary situations and societal shifts in post-war Japan. The anime adaptation, produced by Eiken, brought these slice-of-life stories to an even wider audience, becoming a wholesome staple of Japanese family viewing. Its consistent broadcast time on Fuji TV every Sunday evening has made it a familiar part of Japanese weekend routines for decades.

Despite its immense popularity, the creator, Machiko Hasegawa, reportedly never wanted merchandise made for the series, including home video releases, making the availability of older episodes incredibly rare. The introduction of an arcade game marks a significant departure from this long-standing tradition.

Characters Named After Marine Life

An interesting detail about the Sazae-san characters is that many are named after marine animals and sea-themed things. For example, Sazae is named after a type of sea snail called a horned turban. This subtle thematic element adds another layer of charm to the beloved series.

The upcoming Sazae-san Machigai Sagashi arcade game offers a fresh and interactive way for generations of fans to engage with the timeless characters and heartwarming world of Sazae-san.
