Mizuho Kusanagi’s beloved fantasy romance manga, Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona), is set to conclude its serialization on December 19, bringing its epic 15-year journey to an end. The final chapter will be published in the second 2026 issue of Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine.

The announcement marks the culmination of a long-running series that has captivated fans worldwide with its compelling story of Princess Yona’s quest to reclaim her kingdom and forge her own destiny.

The End of an Era: Yona of the Dawn‘s Legacy

First launched in August 2009, Yona of the Dawn has become a staple in the shojo manga genre, celebrated for its intricate plot, character development, and blend of adventure, fantasy, and romance. The manga officially entered its final arc in June 2024, preparing readers for the highly anticipated conclusion.

A Journey of Transformation and Growth

The series follows Princess Yona, who, after witnessing the murder of her father and being betrayed by her childhood love, Su-won, is forced to flee her kingdom. Accompanied by her loyal bodyguard Hak, Yona embarks on a perilous journey to gather the four legendary Dragon Warriors, discovering her inner strength and leadership abilities along the way. The narrative explores themes of loss, resilience, political intrigue, and the complexities of love and loyalty.

Milestones and Adaptations

Over its extensive run, Yona of the Dawn has achieved significant milestones:

  • Anime Adaptation: The manga inspired a 24-episode television anime series in 2014, produced by Studio Pierrot, which further expanded its global fanbase. This was followed by three original anime DVDs released between 2015 and 2016.
  • Stage Plays: The series has also been adapted into multiple stage plays, including a musical, with performances spanning from 2016 to 2024.
  • Circulation: As of June 2024, the manga has 15 million copies in circulation worldwide, a testament to its enduring popularity.
  • Volume Releases: Hakusensha has published 46 compiled book volumes as of June 2025, with the 47th volume, rumored to be the final one, expected in Spring 2026, potentially including a special art book. Viz Media licenses the manga for English release in North America.

What’s Next for Fans?

While the manga’s conclusion marks the end of an era, fans can still revisit Princess Yona’s adventure through the existing 46 compiled volumes and the anime adaptation. The English release of the manga by Viz Media continues, with the 44th volume released in June 2025, and the 47th volume anticipated in Spring 2026. The series recently returned from a hiatus on October 3, allowing for the final chapters to unfold.

The journey of Yona, Hak, and the Dragon Warriors has left an indelible mark on readers, and its conclusion on December 19 will be a bittersweet moment for many.
