The highly anticipated anime film adaptation of Nowaki Fukamidori’s fantasy novel, Whoever Steals This Book (Kono Hon wo Nusumu Mono wa), has revealed several new cast members and showcased fresh trailers ahead of its theatrical debut in Japan on December 26. The new announcements further build excitement for the mystery-adventure fantasy, which centers on a high school student thrust into a magical quest to save her town from a book-triggered curse.

Expanding the Voice Cast: New Talents Join the Adventure

A roster of talented voice actors is set to bring the enchanting world of Whoever Steals This Book to life. Among the recently announced cast members are:

  • Rie Takahashi
  • Reina Ueda
  • Tomokazu Seki
  • Shimba Tsuchiya as Takafumi Haruta
  • Romi Park as Tamaki Mikura

These additions join previously revealed main cast members, including Rin Kataoka as Mifuyu Mikura and Sora Tamaki as Mashiro, both making their voice acting debuts. Nao Toyama will voice Hirune Mikura, Junichi Suwabe is cast as Ayumu Mikura, and Shizuka Ito will portray Keiko Yosano.

New Trailers Offer Glimpses into a Cursed World

New trailers for Whoever Steals This Book have been released, providing a deeper look at the film’s animation, key characters, and the intriguing premise. The trailers also feature the film’s theme song, “Share,” performed by the acclaimed artist YUKI. This captivating track sets the tone for the magical adventure that awaits viewers. The KADOKAWAanime YouTube channel has released both 60-second and 30-second official trailers, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the visual style and narrative hints of the upcoming movie.

The film’s visual identity is further solidified by a newly unveiled key visual, which beautifully encapsulates the essence of the story.

The Story: A Reluctant Heroine’s Magical Quest

The narrative of Whoever Steals This Book follows Mifuyu Mikura, a high school student living in Yomunagamachi, a town renowned for its love of books. Despite her family’s long-standing legacy of managing the vast Mikura Hall library, Mifuyu herself harbors a dislike for reading.

However, her peaceful, book-averse life takes an unexpected turn when several books are stolen from the library, triggering an ancient “Book Curse” that begins to transform the town according to the various stories contained within the stolen tomes. To lift the curse and restore order, Mifuyu, with the assistance of the enigmatic girl Mashiro, must embark on a perilous adventure, venturing into the very stories she despises to track down the thief and unravel the mysteries surrounding her family and the curse.

Production Team Behind the Enchantment

The film is directed by Daiki Fukuoka (also referred to as Daisei Fukuoka in some reports), with the screenplay penned by Yasuhiro Nakanishi. Keiko Kurosawa is responsible for character design and serves as chief animation director, while Michiru Oshima composes the film’s score. Animation production is handled by Studio KAGOKAN, and Kadokawa Animation is distributing the film.

Based on Nowaki Fukamidori’s novel, first published in October 2020, and its manga adaptation, Whoever Steals This Book promises a unique blend of fantasy and mystery for anime enthusiasts.
