Fantagraphics, the renowned independent comics publisher, has announced the launch of a new imprint named Takumigraphics, dedicated to publishing East Asian comics. This new venture aims to significantly expand Fantagraphics’ presence in the growing market for manga, manhwa, and manhua, with a commitment to releasing 16 titles annually starting in Spring 2026. A highlight of the initial lineup will be the highly anticipated re-release of Takako Shimura’s acclaimed Wandering Son manga in new 2-in-1 omnibus editions.

Takumigraphics: A New Chapter for East Asian Comics

The name “Takumigraphics” is a portmanteau, combining “Takumi,” a Japanese term signifying “artisan” or “craftsman,” with “graphics,” underscoring the imprint’s dedication to high-quality, thoughtfully curated East Asian comic art. While the imprint will eventually encompass a broad spectrum of East Asian comics, its initial focus will be on Japanese manga, including works that transcend typical genre classifications and offer unique artistic and narrative perspectives.

Fantagraphics’ re-entry into the serialized manga market with a dedicated imprint marks a strategic move to address the increasing demand for diverse and critically acclaimed comics from the region. The publisher has a history of publishing Japanese titles, dating back to 2010 when it first released Wandering Son.

Wandering Son Returns Alongside Diverse Launch Titles

Fans of Takako Shimura’s Wandering Son (also known as Hourou Musuko) will finally have the opportunity to complete their collections. The series, which explores themes of gender identity, friendship, and adolescence, was initially published by Fantagraphics but faced an incomplete release due to what the publisher cited as low sales at the time. Under the Takumigraphics banner, the beloved series will be re-released in comprehensive 2-in-1 omnibus editions, allowing new and old readers alike to experience its full narrative arc.

Beyond Wandering Son, Takumigraphics has revealed an exciting and diverse initial slate of titles scheduled for Spring 2026:

  • Wandering Cat’s Cage by Akane Torikai: A poignant one-shot manga from an artist celebrated for her nuanced exploration of contemporary relationships and societal pressures. Torikai’s work often challenges conventions, making it a fitting choice for Fantagraphics’ independent spirit.
  • Lovers of the Empire Vol. 1 by Yudori: This title is a manhwa, representing the imprint’s commitment to Korean comics. Yudori is known for compelling historical or fantastical narratives often imbued with social commentary.
  • On Their Frontlines: The Lives of Japanese War Brides Vol. 1 by Marina Lisa Komiya: A non-fiction manga that delves into the often-overlooked stories and experiences of Japanese women who married American servicemen after World War II. This series promises to offer a unique historical and cultural perspective.

Fantagraphics’ Enduring Legacy and Future Vision

Fantagraphics has long been a champion of auteur-driven comics and graphic novels, known for publishing works that prioritize artistic merit and unique storytelling over commercial trends. The launch of Takumigraphics reflects this philosophy, aiming to introduce English-speaking audiences to critically significant East Asian works that might otherwise be overlooked.

The publisher’s previous foray into manga laid important groundwork, showcasing their dedication to quality translation and presentation. With Takumigraphics, Fantagraphics is poised to not only revisit past successes like Wandering Son but also to become a major platform for a new generation of diverse and impactful East Asian comic creators, further enriching the global comics landscape.
