The Enduring Legacy of Hana-Kimi
Hana-Kimi (full title: Hana Zakari no Kimi-tachi e or For You in Full Blossom) is a romance shojo manga created by the late Hisaya Nakajo. The manga was serialized in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine from 1996 to 2004, concluding with 23 tankobon volumes. Viz Media released the manga in English. Nakajo passed away in October 2023 at the age of 50 due to a heart condition, making this anime adaptation a poignant tribute to her work.
The story revolves around Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese-American track-and-field star who disguises herself as a boy to enroll in an all-boys’ high school in Japan. Her goal is to meet her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano, and help him return to the sport. Unbeknownst to Mizuki, Sano soon discovers her secret, leading to a series of comedic and heartwarming events, further complicated by a fellow classmate, Shuichi Nakatsu, who develops feelings for Mizuki, believing her to be male.
The manga’s immense popularity has previously led to several live-action drama adaptations, including versions in Taiwan (2006), Japan (2007 and 2011), and South Korea (2012), solidifying its status as a timeless shojo classic. The upcoming anime is the first animated adaptation of the beloved series.
