Delving into the World of ‘Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl’
VIRGIN PUNK: Clockwork Girl is an original anime film series brought to life by director Yasuomi Umetsu and animation studio SHAFT, known for works such as Kite and the Monogatari Series. The narrative unfolds in the year 2099, a future where humanity has overcome most injuries and illnesses through advanced medical artificial human body technology called “Somadea.” However, this technological advancement has also led to a surge in crimes involving the misuse of Somadea, which grants superior physical abilities when illegally modified.
To combat these “Somadea crimes,” the government has implemented a bounty hunter system, allowing registered civilians to eliminate designated Somadea criminals in exchange for substantial rewards. The story centers on Ubu Kamigori, a bounty hunter who lives by tracking down these criminals. Her destiny takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Mr. Elegance, a figure from her past, upon returning home from a mission. The anime is described as a suspenseful action tale woven with mechanical girls and the scent of gunpowder smoke, exploring Ubu’s anguish and the desires and chaos of the strong characters surrounding her.
The Creative Minds Behind the Anime
Yasuomi Umetsu not only directed VIRGIN PUNK: Clockwork Girl but also created the original story and designed the characters. Yūya Takahashi is credited with writing the film’s scripts. The music for the series is composed by Yoshiaki Dewa. The project was officially announced at Aniplex Online Fest 2024, with its initial limited theatrical release in Japan commencing on June 27, 2025. The upcoming U.S. theatrical release marks a significant milestone in bringing this original creation to a wider international audience.
