The spinoff manga for Subaruichi’s popular fantasy series, The Legendary Hero is Dead!, officially titled Yūsha ga Shinda! Kami no Kuni-hen (The Legendary Hero Is Dead! God’s Land Arc), is set to conclude with the release of its second compiled book volume. Shogakukan, the publisher, has listed the upcoming second volume as the final installment, with a shipping date of January 19.
The Spinoff’s Journey to Conclusion
The Kami no Kuni-hen spinoff first began its serialization in Shogakukan’s MangaONE app in May 2022. The first compiled volume was released in March 2023. However, the series experienced an indefinite hiatus in April 2023 due to the author’s illness, and this upcoming second volume marks its definitive conclusion.
Origins of “The Legendary Hero is Dead!” Franchise
The original The Legendary Hero is Dead! manga, known in Japan as Yūsha ga Shinda! Murabito no Ore ga Hotta Otoshiana ni Yuusha ga Ochita Kekka (The Legendary Hero is Dead! The Result of My Villager Self Falling into a Pit I Dug), was penned and illustrated by Subaruichi. It was serialized on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website and MangaONE app from December 16, 2014, to December 14, 2020, spanning 20 tankōbon volumes.
The series gained further prominence with an anime television series adaptation produced by Liden Films, which aired from April to June 2023. Crunchyroll licensed the anime outside of Asia, while Muse Communication handled its distribution in South and Southeast Asia.
A Brief Overview of the Original Story
The Legendary Hero is Dead! introduces Touka Scott, a seemingly ordinary (and somewhat perverted) farmer in the village of Cheza. His mundane life takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally kills Sion, the legendary hero destined to save the world from invading demons, by causing him to fall into one of Touka’s strategically placed traps.
To conceal the accident, Touka buries Sion’s body. However, he awakens the next day to discover his soul has been transferred into Sion’s deceased body, resurrected by Sion’s necromancer companion, Anri Haysworth. Now, Touka, inhabiting the hero’s corpse, must begrudgingly take on the monumental task of resealing the Gates of Hell and combating the demonic threat alongside Yuna Eunice, his childhood friend, and Anri. The story is known for its blend of adventure, fantasy, and comedic elements, often leaning into the absurd.
